Full Version: David Jay's Brilliant
OpenSourcePhoto > GetIt > Brilliant Bridge and Lightroom Presets

I am at work and can't watch the videos for Brilliant.

I have CS2 and just got LR over the weekend. I have two E-Sessions that I have not processed yet (I was sick all weekend! I slept most of the day). My clients would like to see something. Brilliant looks like it would be a major time saver. Would someone please tell me all about Brilliant?

Thank you. smile.gif

It's Brilliant Neal! thumbsup.gif

No, seriously, DJ has set up a bunch of "presets" that you can use to process your photos. I have the set for Bridge that was bought before the Lightroom ones came out (can't log back in to get the Lightroom ones for some reason.... mad.gif ) so I really can't comment on how they translated to Lightroom.

For bridge, I found that the presets were a good start to work from. Basically, I would view my photos in the "Lightbox" view - select the ones that were shot under the same lighting conditions, CTRL + Click (right click for PC users) and select one of the brilliant presets. This would update the photos selected within seconds. Then you can see pretty quickly which ones work for that photo and which ones don't.

In terms of "batch processing" images, the Brilliant Presets were very helpful. I believe there were 22 of them so there is lots of choice and variation.

And remember, you can pick one that you like, tweak it and save your own presets.

I hope this helped!

This is not about the brilliant settings, but about how to satiate a customer... give them what they want... 3-5 of your favorite images on your blog... which will buy you another 1-2 weeks of processing time.

Already did that smile.gif

DJ's Brilliant Settings totally helped to revolutionize my current work flow. I'm editing stuff in a fraction of the time and went from being discouraged to feeling empowered. Actually, that sounds kind of cheesy. Seriously though, I'm shooting RAW and am getting stuff out the door in no time. My stuff is much more consistent and my edits are done much more quickly. They are well worth the $50-60 IMHO.
NealJacob
Okay, then what does Brilliant ($49) do that Photo Presets ($0) doesn't do?? smile.gif

Ditto that!! They have saved me VALUABLE time and although they may not be the perfect chice for every situation they are very good as a starting point. I would say that 80% of the time I don't have to do anything to the image when useing Brilliant presets.

Right on! I'm stoked their helping you guys save some time! smile.gif

Yes, I agree...

I have been using Brilliant setings on LR and they do help me to work faster through my conversion and allows you to give the client something that look different.

Those are more basic presets and appear to be used for doing lots of edits to an individual picture. The Brilliant Presets are specialized for what we shoot so you don't need to apply a whole bunch of differerent ones to each individual photo and you can take advantage of batch correcting...and they're good for Bridge and Lightroom.

You can watch his videos and see what his effects do and it's much different from what the Brilliant Presests do but do watch the videos and see for yourself.

Okay, thank you DJ. I am at work and although I can watch videos, (on the sly!) it probably wouldn't be a good choice. So, I'll have to take a look later. smile.gif

Neal, this is my assestment (my 2 cents) of both so far:

For those looking for "one does all" that look like effects, I suggest Dj's presets. DJ's are more of an effect or "style" presets (the fact that they have vigneting shows that he was looking for a 'preset' style". They are effective and useful in creating certain look. (DJ, please correct me if I am wrong in this assesment of purpose).

Jack Davis' presets are truly adjustment presets for those looking for flexibility and control. They are more versatiles than Brilliant in so far you can layer the adjustments over each other and you can reset adjustments individually. The white balance presets are better than the ones that come with LR. You have several B/W conversions, tints, sepias, warming, etc. They are trully adjustments presets. All in all, they offer more control and they are not an "easy fix".

I have them, appreciate them and use them both.

I'm also really intrigued by these presets. Is there anywhere to see some before and after shots? It's probably there and I'm just too dense to see it. smile.gif

In the same boat as Connie - despite repeated attempts - can't find any trace of this "path" either. Any advice as to how to FIND this so I can load the presets ?

Many thanks

hmmm...what operating system are you on and what version of Photoshop do you have?

Hi,

I have been using only the Canon raw software for my initial processing and am about to get either Bridge or Lightroom. I was leaning towards lightroom until I saw David Jay's recent comment about how they have removed the intelligent auto feature. What do you recommend as at the moment, I have only Adobe 7.0 and the Canon software.

Thanks so much,

Sacha Blackburne

What does this mean for Lightroom users that would like to use Brilliant? Are there any videos or samples pics of what you can do with Brilliant in Lightroom specifically? I'm on the fence.

Andy, that makes you and me both.

I bought the brilliant for my CS2 bridge, which I love! but i'm not sure if that version will translate to either CS3 or lightroom.

DJ.. can you comment on that? Thanks~
Mark
I have the LR pre-sets from Marcus Bell. Has anyone else used those and know how they compare to DJ's?

I love DJ's stuff, but don't want/need to spend more money on redundant software. i already have too many actions...

If you are using WinXP, the path may not have been created if you have never used Adobe Camera Raw. I think the easiest way to create the path is to launch Photoshop and open up a RAW image (i.e. File | Open and browse to your .CR2 for Canon or .NEF for Nikon). This will launch Adobe Camera Raw. Close each of the programs and go to your Windows File Explorer. You should see the path at C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings. Drop your Brilliant! .xmp files into the Settings folder.

David -

How do you apply presets to a bunch of selected photos in Lightroom like you demonstrate in the video?

Thanks.

Mark, where did you get Marcus's stuff, at a seminar? I don't see them available anywhere so. Very curious to say the least. Thanks smile.gif
