Full Version: Our 2 day old 5d Broke

So we just got a brand new 5d in the mail Monday and tonight I noticed while changing lenses that the mirors and parts were all moving around and swinging.... this scared me but I decided not to do anything until I got home. When I got home I took off the lense again and tilted the camera forward and a part fell out. It is like a little translucent square the size of the mirrors! I am horrified and kind of ticked off. We have a shoot tomorrow and I was soooo excited to use it and now I have to spend hours on the phone and probably $75 in shipping to try to get some one to "fix" it. Of course it will be fun as the insist that I must have dropped it or stuck my fingers in there or something else that I never did but, whatever.

So B&H where I bought it is closed until next week and I know canon will take a month to do something about it. I'm really bummed about this all. Thanks for letting me vent.

welcome.

Bummer for sure, come to NZ, you can borrow mine anytime!

I honestly think coming to NZ to borrow yours is my fastest option at this point!

Sounds like the focusing screen. Does it look like these? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller...focusing+screen

I don't think it will take Canon that long. Send it to the Irvine, CA service center ... tell them what happened, and file your warranty. Shouldn't be much of a problem.

Sorry this happened!

My first 5d mysteriously fell apart within a week as well. I called, shaking and nearly crying to Canon... but in the end, it only took them about 10 days to have a new one back in my hands! Good luck!!

A friend of mine had the 5D with a macro and ringflash in use.
He is a dentist and tried to use this combo for bleeching pics.
Well.. after 10 shots the lens + ringflash felt off the camera and layed shattered on the ground. The complete bayonett broke out of the body.

Now he owns a D2Xs :-)

Our mirror came out too and I thought and I freaked. My husband just popped it back into place and it's perfectly fine. Not sure if this is the same situation you're in, but maybe you should look into it before sending it in.

I don't think I will be buying a 5D anytime soon
I think I will stick with my 20's and 30's

As I usually say, buy from a local dealer if you can. Any good camera store would have replaced it, no questions asked. It's usually worth the extra $50 - $100. And that's only if they won't match B&H's pricing -- many will. I've had this happen with an expensive lens and I got a replacement on a Saturday morning before a wedding.

But if you can't buy local, B&H through Zack is your best bet.

It's probably just the focusing screen. On the 1D's and 5D it is user replaceable.

Check out this link that talks about installing a new one to see if it's really the focusing screen that fell out. If so, it's an easy fix!

Sounds like the focus screen. The 5D has several styles that can be installed by the user.

Oops - just saw johns post.
