Ok, I have this kick ass space in Fishers, IN and am expanding. I am possibly looking into sharing my new space with another photographer...NOT BLENDING BUSINESSES, just a studio mate of sorts.

I have a few interested souls, but would love some feedback, comments, interested people to post. I have never heard about anyone sharing studio space with independent businesses, but am sure it has been done before. My rent is reasonable, but I am looking to cut back on shooting and spend more time with my kids so would rather not have the stress of overhead. Can do it myself no problem...but if I can find that perfect someone I'd love to have a friend in the studio!

I can think of all the great things like sharing the bills, responsibility of keeping up the studio, passing along business when I am too busy and vice versa, sharing large jobs (and the profit! I shoot some large preschools and leagues), networking, sharing ideas/inspiration, etc. that list goes on.

The not so great things might be scheduling conflict, two logos on the door, where to hang what art, two people on the phone at the same time????

Also, this is a relationship of sorts because I practically live at my studio Mon.-Fri. and often Saturdays if I don't have a wedding.

Thoughts? Anyone done this before?

My other alternative is just to rent the space out, that is a good deal as well.

thanks for your input guys!

Jenny,
I have a photographer friend here in SD who shares space with another photog and a videographer. It has worked well for them for quite some time. What makes it good is that the spaces are clearly defined and the two photogs specialize in different things. One does more portraits and commercial while the other does weddings and events. Plenty of overlap, of course, but apparently it's rarely awkward or unusual to have both. They all can also use one community lobby space and actual studio backdrop area. Wish I could help you more, but I saw the place and thought it worked nicely. Congrats and good luck.

Thanks, Eddie.

It is a big step for me if I do. The good thing is I rent month to month and won't require a lease so if things aren't working out we can always "part ways". I think it would be ideal if I found someone who shoots more product, commercial and weddings than portrait. I shoot a lot of portraiture so am there a lot. The office space is separate from the camera room, but it would be shared. My current studio is loft-style and very "open" so really no room for two photogs.

Thanks for your input! I hope I find the right person!

Jenny
