I read this on the Adobe website:
"When you are finished creating your web photo gallery, you can use the FTP capabilities in Lightroom to upload your gallery to a web server. Once you click the Upload button, Lightroom automatically generates the necessary files and then transfers them to the web server you specify.
If you prefer to use a separate FTP application for uploading your files, or if you want to generate a gallery for offline viewing, you can first export the files. When you click the Export button, Lightroom creates a folder containing HTML files, image files, and other web-related files. If you’re saving a Flash gallery, the necessary SWF files are included. The folder is saved in a location that you specify."
Apparently it only creates a preview and does not actually start taking up HD until you actually export the gallery. I hope this helps.
I hope you are right. Is that I see the progress bar in the top left and says converting jpgs...
See, Aperture, for example, uses the previews that it creates. And I have notice that LR is significally faster exporting the web gallery it creates. I would guess that it is partly because it does some or most in the background. looking at the progress bar, it is creating jps and it has to put them some place.
Now, if I actually go to the web module to create an actual web gallery it probably my question is moot. Because it will export what I created.
But if what I do is go there just to look what it can do (like I did yesterday and it tried to create a 300 image gallery), will it keep all those jpgs store or will erase them at some point? If I do this several time and it does not erase the files it will be using HD innecesraily.
I'll do some experimenting and digging to find out and let everyone know if I find something.
