I am in the market for a couple external hard drives....should I be looking for Firewire 800 compatible drives? Is the difference in speed between 800 and 400 worth the extra cost, or will I really not notice a huge difference? BTW I will be running them on my G5 dual 2gz 5GB ram.

Yes, Firewire 800 will give you a very noticable boost in speed. After switching to 800 drives, I don't plan on ever going back.
