I just received my new 30" Apple Cinema display today, woohoo!! I remember hearing somewhere that Apple displays do not need to be calibrated...is this true?

I would do it anyways. Mine out of the box was very very close, but after calibration you could see a visable difference.

every monitor should be calibtrated. some are better than others out of the box, but a $70 huey will save you a lot later.
I really like my gregtagmacbeth eye one display 2

i have a 20" and 23" in my studio. YES they need to be calibrated. they are very close to begin with, but i noticed a big difference when calibrated, and the test prints from my lab confirmed that my calibration is DEAD ON (gamma 2.2 and temperature 6500K as your target calibration)
get a Spyder2 Pro from Amazon.com, they're 199.99 with free shipping. easy to use, and a real pro calibration system, works like a charm, and well worth its weight in gold!

I agree, the Eye One Display 2 is a great thing. I have it and calibrate my 30" every month. While mine is very close out of the box too, I have a friend who's 30" cinema display is quite green without calibration. YMMV but I'd calibrate it.

Thanks guys. I already have the Pantone Eye-One Display 2, so I will use that on it. I was just curious if I needed to do it or not. I cant wait to hook his beast up and start designing albums!

That's a beautiful screen you've got there, congrats! They all need to be calibrated. How often would depend on the particular monitor.

How far away are you guys sitting from these 30 inchers? It would be cool to have one of these on my desk. Then I could turn it around and use it for proofing too.

I sit probably about 2 to 2 1/2 feet from mine. The monitors are big, but the resolution is so hight that you can still sit pretty close to it with no problems.
