I am looking for a video camera. something on the small side but packed with quality. I was thinking the 1.5k to 2k range. I know that there are some of you out there that are both photographers and videographers. Let me know your thoughts. If there is something above the price range that I listed let me know if you think it is well worth it.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not a video person, but Canon has ultra small cameras that are now HD for $499 and $999, and from looking at them the quality is amazing. But I didn't get to test in low light and really don't know the comparisons between models anymore. I have been out of the loop for a couple years on video. The $1k model would allow you to get wireless mikes and video lights and other needed supplies too if it could work for you.

No one else? No ideas?

used XL2 or something like that. the new canon HD cameras are SUPER cool, but they're like 4K.

don't get an XL1, they perform like crap in low light, but an XL1S or an XL2 would be a sweet deal... you may be able to find one for around that price range.

Ditto,

We have a couple of XL1-S' great cameras and very reliable. Worth getting them serviced every year if your using them regularly though. They are a bulky camera though so if you are wanting something small then consider the new Canon HD compacts.

I would pick up the new HD Canon with the mic jack for a cool grand, and spend another thousand on a good video tripod and audio equipment.

Joel,

I just sold my XL2 a couple of months ago to return to photography.
My two cents -- It is large, heavy, and awkward. It is really hard to blend in with this camera if you are trying.
I wasn't happy with the low light capabilities.
I would for sure invest in some good audio equipment, depending upon what you are doing. As far as tripods go, get something pretty sturdy, with a swivel head to pan. Good luck.

I am just wanting the videocamera for personal use and travel, thus the small aspect of things is important. Thanks for all of the advice.

I use the Sony HC1 HDV camcorders.

They are small and compact and nice.

If you are looking into personal use and travel, just go with whatever camcorder you can afford.

FYI, Amazon has a sale on waterproof housing for certain camcorders for $100. Useful for traveling in "harsher" conditions.
