I shot my first same sex engagement session this morning. Thought I'd share with everyone. I know some of us were discussing this a while back. Here's a few from the shoot.

How I'd do everyone?

Thanks,

Alan

Nice work, Alan. Looks like you had no problems at all...the couple looks very happy.

I met with a female couple last week who were very friendly and very fun. In fact, they booked me on the spot. I'm actually very jazzed about shooting their engagement and wedding pics!

Cheers! smile.gif

Hey Floyd, Thanks for your comments.

It's was a lot of fun. They are both really great people and I enjoyed photographing them. I'm looking forward to their commitment ceremony.

Id' say you did a great job smile.gif

My favs are the b/w one and the last, bottom shot -- mostly because they both have a comfortable feel to them. The bottom/last one has a truly classic pose, but the two women pull it off well in being casual. Lighting is also very nicely done.

Did you take any closeups on just their faces -- or was everything pulled back as shown in these four?

ThomasAlan
Thanks Joshua,

I like the black and white one too. I told her to whisper sweet nothing in her ear. biggrin.gif She was probably telling her what a DORK I am. biggrin.gif

I did shot a couple face close ups but for these type of sessions I try to show them as a couple.

Hey Alan! Nice shots! smile.gif

I like the b/w and the bottom left one the best! Something about the color one makes it my favorite but I can't figure out what it is...

p.s. I think you can probably compress them a little more and still have them look great on the forum and it'll help us conserve a little space... Here are some tricks.... click here

Hey DJ,

Thanks for the feedback. I debated on converting more of them to B&W. The park we shot at had so many beautiful colors it was hard to decide which one to convert. Plus B&W conversion is an art I think. If done right on the right photo it makes the photo, but can also ruin a good photo if done wrong. Anyway this subject is probably a whole new topic:-)

Regarding the compression.... sorry they are a little larger than 50k. I tried medium compression but for some reason they were very grainy. Maybe because I used the new "Smart Sharpen" in CS2 (which is great BTW) I'll play with the settings for the future however.

Thanks
Katherine
Hi Alan...

I think you did a great job! Really captured their love for each other.

But just from a woman's point of view...the third one on the right might not be flattering for the girl on the left being that it's a shot that goes up and shows her double chin. You can see the difference between that and and bottom left....See how you shot it from above her face and how flattering she looks? She looks absolutely beautiful in that! Anyhow...she might not even be as self conscious as I am when my shots are taken....she might just love the composition of where and how you took the shots with the building in the back.

Just a few tricks I learned taking BBW's. wink.gif

You do awesome work and I hope to see some of your ceremony shots!

Katherine,

Thank you:-) I thought of that on several of the photos because she is heavy but I guess I liked the composition:-) I guess this is why we take as many shots as possible.

I'm looking forward to the ceremony also. They are really nice and we all love working with nice people:-)

I agree...big girls are hard to take pics of especially if they don't wear black. I hope I wasn't being too nit picky for you...you know I'm a fan of yours...smile.gif I had this one girl I did for senior portraits and she wore like a white tank top, SLEEVELESS, and it was tight. When she saw her pictures she kept saying that she looked sooo fat and that her arms were huge and that I could have fixed that. Go figure rolleyes.gif wacko.gif

Someone lied to that big hunnie girl...poor thing.

Roger...this is Kitty Kat...I'm out.

Kitty Kat,

No way. You weren't be too picky. I really apreciate the feedback.

Peace Out :-) Ok. It's not military but it works

I agree on the 3rd from the right not being the most flattering because of the angle of view. The girls seem a little reserved in posing- not quite as physically expressive as other couples I've seen and so I would shoot a little tighter to catch a more intimate feel.

They seem to convey everything in their eyes to each other. Possibly they are not used to openly conveying affection?

I think what is important to capture in female same-sex couples (in theory, I have yet to do one) is that usually visually, the female body is not the #1 attracting factor. It's more relationship-oriented than physical.

Shortly put, I would go heavy on the detail shots of holding hands, stolen glances, close-cropped shots of "looking into my mate's eyes".

Just my two cents.
