So what do you guys wear when you are shooting??? What is nice enough for a wedding, but still comfortable enough to move and shoot???

Going shopping for some post baby clothes... and really want something more than the old black pants and button down...

So tell me what you wear!?!
davidjay
I'm kind of a girl so I figured I'd answer.... smile.gif

Here are two of my old asst's taking care of most of the action! cool.gif

Laughing hysterically that the only reply so far comes from DJ... who called himself "kind of a girl"...

So DJ... Do we have to have that little talk???

Just kidding man. laugh.gif

Nuttin' wrong with black hunnie girl!!!I still wear all black. Nice black slacks and a black silk tank....Anyhow...there's nothing wrong with wearing all black...just make it look sassy yet classy!! Comfy but still says that you've still got some game in you! tongue.gif

OKay seriously... even you guys can answer for me... what do your female associates wear when shooting...

And girls... talk to me about shoes... What can withstand a 12-14 hour day and still look decent???

Katherine
How about those sneakers with high heels? lol..just kiddin' amber..

If you're not wearing those open toe sandals...then you could put those gel inserts for shock absorbers. Very comfortable and feels like youre walking on clouds.

KK
Shua
Um...
(scratches belly)

Lemme get this straight: you're saying something's wrong with my speedo/tanktop combo??
Dang, needing another trip to Wallmart, then. sad.gif
Linda
LOL @ Shua again.. He is a riot..

Amber, this is what I do.

I always were (loose) black pants and a white silk top.

Shoes are my major issue.
I found a great pair of shoes that were so stylish and comfy..
And wore them to a wedding..
LOL.. They squeaked with every step. And it wasnt a polite little squeak. ohmy.gif

So I have tried many pairs of shoes.. Either they kill my feet of make me look like a granny.

KK - Im going to try the jell inserts.. smile.gif

Good luck Amber.. And let us know what you decide on..

DJ is just comfortable with his feminine side - good for you!

Amber, I'm still into the black button down/black slacks look. I may change my mind after shooting some 120 degree Atlanta weddings this summer..(DJ, don't complain about the OC weather!). Callisto shoes are extremely comfortable - I wear a nude pair with 2" heels.

Questions for YOU, Ms. New Mommy - what did you do about your photo shoot attire as your belly started to grow? Did you have to keep buying new clothes every month? How about shoes? Did you have any problems with them as your feet swelled? I have NO idea what to expect should I get pregnant but those are some of things that concern me. unsure.gif

Hey... lucky for me... I was pregnant in the wintertime... and Ponchos were a HOT item this season. I wore charcoal pants and a black poncho (usually with a tank underneath, because no matter how cold it was, I was burning up!). the poncho was great, because it really grew with me... Ii did have some severe swelling... and ended up in flipflops all winter (nothing else would fit).

Where can I find the shoes you mentioned??

(I agree wholeheartedly that DJ should not complain about the weather in his wrld... it is ridiculously hot here in Chattanooga... and SO humid... one of the reasons I was looking for some other options... thinking maybe little [ornot so little post preg] black dress... not sure yet though)
Chris Humphreys

here's a picture of a Katie and I a few months ago at a wedding and you can see what she's wearing. Her pants are black pinstrips.

The dress of a wedding photographer...it sure is a challenge. I am a little different but here is what I do... I wear black alot but I also get really sick of all black so sometimes I have to mix it up. I like to be dressed in such a way that I can mix in with the crowd. I feel like clients respect that. I have two favorite outfits that I wear to weddings. One is black pants and a black lace shirt. The other is a white shirt that hits below the knee and I usually wear a black or a light pink shirt with that. As for shoes...I wear an Anne Klein sandal that has a heel. Maybe I have just learned to stand in them but I find them pretty comfrontable. However, I move around alot when I shoot and I am not afraid to kick off my shoes if I need to climb up onto something. In fact I move around so much that I am usually sore the next day. smile.gif
Amy Nave
Grey or black slacks with a dark dressy tank. I also have several wrap around shirts that I wear over the tank that tie in front. However the last two weddings were so hot that I just wore the tank. I wear black flats otherwise I would probably trip, fall and make a complete idiot out of myself blink.gif
amber holritz
Okay, so it sounds like I have been on the right track all along... sometimes I just feel a bit dressed down... and WAY too hot.\
Haven't seen a decent black sleeveless shirt/tank... but will keep an eye out for that...
May also go the black dress route, try to find something sleeveless, and pick up a wrap for those ceremonies at which the bare shoulders would be offensive (or the occasional ICY COLD sanctuary)

Thanks for all your input guys...

It;ll be the shoes that are hard to find.

Shopping I go...

Hey! I usualy wear nice pants.. not always black.. maybe grey or navy or pinstripes of different colors and a cute shirt..i think Layering always looks nice with shirts and to dress it up a little more i always wear cute jewlery!! As far as shoes I wear low heals for the wedding and change into dressy cute flats for the reception!! Hope I helped! Ashley

I am about to wear pants cause I am tired of fighting dresses. Nothing in front to catch anything. The camera straps are hard enough. I had some great pearls around my neck the other day that came off immediatly. I had a wrap shirt that didn't work cause of course it unwraps with a day long of shooting. I think I have had dresses that were too much for the occasion and the brides mom didn't wear anything nice. I am thinking a solid black with nothing in front of it, straight down dress, long so I can bend, with maybe a simple jacket that is elegant. But I usually wear all black, maybe with pearls on my wrist or a great watch to have a dressy look. But I am not a style person at all. I am certain I will be watching for some ideas from this forum. I know you girls are much more capible of suggestions. I am a What not to wear candidate.

Oh and I found some low heel shoes that were pointy and they looked great but I think my mid high shoes didn't hurt my legs as much. I know flats would probably be great, but for some reason the heels felt better.
hlphoto
Black pants with some stretch in them, a dressy-ish black tee, danskos with gel inserts. We are often called the "Women in Black."

I can't imagine getting dressed up fancy. I'm there to work hard. Get up on chairs, get down on the floor....
BethC
Pants. I could never shoot a wedding in a skirt/dress. I'm on the floor and climbing around too much. So typically black or grey dress pants, petite, with pockets (for my cards). Yep, incredibly hard to find, but when I do, I strike gold! LOL

I have a bunch of different tops. Nothing bright or flashy. I have those for all seasons, including a very cute black sweater. Sometimes I'll wear a black button down sweater with a little color in the tank or camisole underneath.

Shoes. 100% comfort. Brides really don't want your feet hurting and will want you comfortable. Seriously. Therefore, heels are completely out of question for me. I have a pair of black laced shoes by EasySpirit that are amazing. They look much like the Dansko. The only time I had a bride say something about my shoes was at a beach wedding in July. I got there and she said "Shoes. Off. You won't be happy running around the beach in shoes. You are one of us." My legs and feet were screaming the next day!! But it would have been even worse if I was in shoes.
lmkelley
Well I say dress cause I look better with dresses than with pants. Otherwise I like pants. But you know how people figit (spelling) with their clothes. I do that so the simplier the better for me. Questions>>>>Anyone know of a place to get a strap cushion that makes those camera straps more comfortable. Another issue to keep your eyes out for ladies is no collars and the straps take a toll on your skin. So any suggestions will be great. And I am going check on those shoes you are all talking about. Sounds like a winner.
Heather_R
I wear black slacks and black flats that are really comfortable, and the top is usually dressy.... and often colors.... in general I look like I could be attending the wedding or working it:)

Yep, I've ended up with a really bad friction burn from the camera strap - bad enough that it was bleeding and still red and swollen the next day. now I wrap the strap around my hand and rarely put it around my neck.

As far as clothing - the best wedding pants I have found are Rafaella - Parisian and Macy's have them, they are about $60 a pair, so not outrageous. They are dressy, washable, and have a little stretch to them. Plus they come up high enough in the back that I don't have to worry too much about flashing everyone when I bend over.

I always wear skirts.
Hobbits look better in skirts anyway, and I like to twirl an aweful lot.

Anyway, I wear a skirt and a comfy blouse, and I layer up, because I tend to strip down as the day goes.
Also, my shoes always progess from: cute heels to crocs to bare feets. (Hence my weekly obsession for getting a Pedi!)

I've used an OpTech neoprene strap for years with no issues whatsover. It feels like it takes half the weight of the camera off your neck, and mine at least has never caused me issues on bare skin. Most camera stores carry them--here's the one at B&H. They do come in colors, I always use black though. smile.gif

I am always up front with my clients. I only wear my powder blue ruffled tux. If they aren't cool with that, then they're not the client's I want to serve.

For big church weddings, I do tend to still wear a long skirt. I always try to dress close to what the guests will be wearing. I still wear my Merrell Mary Janes with a nice dress. Other weddings, I wear slacks with stretch and pockets. I have found a few tops that are georgette or light weight (almost sheer) that require a tank under them. That way, the top is big and roomy but I am covered. This is my favorite shirt (Item A70541). They are great in the summer when it is incredibly hot. Then, if I am super sweaty, the tank is yucky but the overshirt is still nice and airy. I have been known to wear gauchos in the summer to an outdoor wedding. They are the best, look like a skirt but no worries. My only problem is that I have big tattoos on my feet and legs, so I wouldn't wear them if I knew the bride's mom was really conservative. I actually found some nice light weight 3/4 sleeve sweaters at Walmart for less than $15 that have the "tank" built in. I wear brown a lot, especially after I changed my branding to purple and brown.

The Dansko Professional Clogs are my favorite shoes. I actually have the confetti felt ones that I wear almost daily, but I wouldn't wear loud shoes to a wedding. There are lots of other fun ones that aren't too Granny looking.

These new Plaza Bandeau by Merrell are cute but comfortable.

I've made the mistake of wearing a skirt for wedding shoots . . . . twice. They were both mid-calf and both a pain in the a$$ to worry about. I like to move - a lot - and in regular life I LOVE wearing skirts but when I'm photographing a wedding it's the black pants all the way.

If you wear nice, dressy, yet comfortable pants and a nice top: white, black, color, you should be fine. I want to "blend in" with the wedding guests to a certain point, meaning I want to look nice and "dressy" enough to be there but I still want people to recognize me as the photographer and that I'm there to work. I'm hired talent biggrin.gif

P.S. just don't wear a white, beaded, satin dress wink.gif Some brides get touchy about that.

I'm all about going with Orange but some of my older clientèle might perceive me as being too hip, trendy, out there...etc etc. So instead I opt for what gives people the most sense of comfort, the baby blue. Like the ladies, I too want to blend in and not stand out so this gives me the edge that I am looking for.

I would agree with that. Thankfully my hips are too wide to pull off the satin look. Polyester is much more forgiving, albeit less fire retardant!

I don't think the new OSPers know about the big crash and ghosts from OSP past. I didn't even notice the date on there myself.

So, Amber, what do you now wear to weddings????

I know this is silly but for my camera strap I just bought so black foam at Hobby Lobby or Micheals.. wrapped it around and used velcro to keep it from coming off it works like a charm! Good Luck

i actually was going to post this exact question yesterday! awesome. okay, so basicaly i'm tired of black, but it seems the most appropriate. i need to find some colors. and some funky (maybe express) type pants that would be cute but not totally outstanding. i LOVE skirts, but they would be so hard to move around in considering, 60% of the time, i'm on the ground all the time. (yes i stole that from the funniest movie in the world).

any other idears/pictures!

OK, I haven't tried these , but in my rich fantasy life I just might smile.gif - I read that the architect/designer from Nike has gone over to Cole-Haan and put Nike cushioning into their beautiful shoes.
Sigh.

My Lucy Chin strapless number and my Jimmy Chu pumps - in case one of the groomsmen are single.

ok I'll fess up - I have NO IDEA what 'pumps' really are - some sort of sneaker?

Love my Dansko's!! No more sore feet at the end of the day smile.gif I wear black slacks with my black COMFY Dansko's. I'm still looking for the right kind of top, so for now I trade back and forth between a couple. I sweat really easily and live in FL - not a good combination... so I'm still looking for the right kind of material and style in a shirt. Any good finds?

Amy what do you do if it rains? biggrin.gif

I shoot in a black skirt and black top...and I don't have problem getting down on the ground or even stepping up onto something high to look down on them.....shoes are a problem.....I want to look stylish and there is no way that I am going to wear shoes that make me look like a granny.......

In the fall and winter, I wear a black suit. It's from the Limited and I love it because it lets me stretch at all my joints and it doesn't feel restricting. I also wear shoes by Sofft. I got mine at Nordstrom, but you can buy them at different department stores. They're really comfortable and I can usually never find shoes that don't kill my feet!

These look like the ones I currently own, but they have flats too. I have to have a little heel because I look ridiculous in flats. I'm petite with humungus feet!! blink.gif

In the summer, I wear a capped sleeve black shirt, lightweight black dress capris and loafers. Good luck!

I will put in my .02, I have purchased 2 pairs of low heel black shoes and each time I either had the squeaking problem spoke of earlier or I was clicking on the hard wood floors, so I ended up kicking off my shoes and running around in black stockings the whole time.

I still am looking for the perfect pair of shoes and outfit for shooting weddings. But when I am doing most any other shoots I am in jeans and tennis shoes.

phototakertiff
if anyone still reads this - I found a great pair of shoes made by Earth - they are comfy and trendy looking -

Girls we should post some picutres of these outfits up here - how is it that I can see good images but putting together a good outfit to take images in is impossable?
lmkelley
I watch 30 episodes of what not to wear back to back the other day and now I am even more confused. I have issues. I can't do half the rules that they say because I am about comfort during a wedding and also elegant, and also no ties in the front to get tangled, and also something that ties at the waist, and stretchy pants, and comfy orthopedic shoes, I mean heels, Oh man I am confused. I know it is not a fashion show, but I want to look nice.
I did get some comfee shoes and it did make a world of difference with my attitude that wedding. I also had stretch pants. They worked great. Less tugging is good. One day I will figure out the shirt and let you all know.

Oh man, I actually have those shoes, well simular from Naturalizers that worked so great. I wore the heels to the wedding and then switch to the flats at the reception. It worked sooo great! But didn't like my jacket. Might have to get a stretch one also. I like jackets but this one wasn't it.

I have a few things to add...

my assistant got a pic of my lower back showing as I was reaching for a shot. I wanted to die. luckily underwear wasn't hanging out, but still... and i am not a tuck in the shirt kind of girl... i found spanks. it's like a sort of body slimmer thing that goes under your clothes. they are at nordstrom, i got them in black that go all the way up to your bra line down your legs too. they're pretty comfy (same effect as good pantyhose, before you breathe out, relax and they roll down... but these stay in place and you don't get some retarted roll half way through the day), i don't have to worry about underwear lines and having a fabric in place is keeping my shirt from riding up and my pants from riding down. since they're black, even if they show a smidge, it doesn't stand out. they also help you stand up straight.

Nordstrom brand caslon cotton shirts work well, i generally layer a scoop neck tank (so no cleavage) and a v neck sleeveless for most every time. i got another v neck 3/4 sleeve and a wrap top that I can layer on for churches or when I'm cold. they're thin, but can be warm and don't look bad when I'm all layered up. the black doesn't fade either. i don't mind the 3 shirts because I'm seriously prepared. i've even taken one of them off for the groom to use as a sweat blotter in a pinch. (only once and no i did not put it back on.)

i've found that i hate wearing socks on wedding days. i'm a flip flop girl. so i got the mesh sketchers, that sort of look like mary janes. they are perfect. airholes to breathe, i can kick them off easy for barefoot and for climbing, but are low profile so they look good with pants and i don't trip.
