We have a font that I specifically purchased for our business, and I want to try to figure out how I could create an image consisting of letters or words written with this font but with a transparent background so that I can drag the letters or words onto other images (i.e. creating a signature that would go on our large prints, etc.). I can't figure out how to create the transparent part of that image - I keep ending up with white background with the logo on top of it. Does this make sense? Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks!

Hey Nathan,
You should be able to do it by going to File>New in Photoshop, then under Background Contents, choose Transparent. The resulting window should open with the transparent background (looks like a checkerboard pattern).

Yea...or delete the "background" layer...and be sure to save as .PSD or other layerable file type so it doesn't flatten and create a background.

I had tried the transparent background option when creating a new document, but then tried saving the final image as a JPEG, and that's when the white background came back. So I need to save the file in a "layerable" format to work? I'll have to give that try!

I had this same situation with something a little different a few months back. I think you can save files with transparent backgrounds as GIFs but not as JPEGs. Try that....

You're right Chris...you can save transparency with a GIF, but it's better to just save a .PSD b/c then you can continue to edit the size and shape of the text in vector form and retain your max resolution.

Don't hold me to this, but I think in CS you can create a vector shape from a text layer and then save it to the "custom shape tool" pallet. If you can actually figure out how to save the shape to the custom pallet, then all you have to do is pop up there any time you need the signature (vs opening your sig. file each time). I got as far as the shape from text stage, but was then stuck. I searched Adobe's help section but couldn't find anything. Perhaps it was in a dream...
