Hi all,

I'm moving to Indiana in a couple of months and will at that point start up (legally) the business. I've been preparing for many months ahead, but as no money will change hands until after we move, I want to make sure I get legal standing before money does start moving around.

So, what all do I need to do, and how do I do it? I know I need to register my name. Where do I go to do that? I've looked through some of the small business sites on the Indiana.gov page, but I'm not really making heads or tails of it. I plan to start as a sole-proprieter. Is there anything I need to do for that?

Thanks!

Nope... just get your accountant/software and start going. Indiana doesn't license most businesses... but you do need to get set up to pay sales tax.

If you do hire an accountant, they can get you set up to collect the nasty 6 percent Indiana Sales Tax, and get all the forms sent in for that.

Should you actually start selling products, and need to collect the tax, to be legal about it, just add 6 percent to all goods that you sell, AND to any SHIPPING charges for products shipped within the state of Indiana.

If the purchaser of said shipment is a legal resident of another state, it's THEIR responsibility to pay their tax to their own state.

bumping this up with an additional question:

Do I need to file "doing business as" forms in Indiana? Do I need to get a Tax ID? Where do I go to get those? I've tried to read the Indiana.gov business site and its mostly about incorporation. Oh...I'm so confused.

Thanks!

If you do business as someone or thing other than some significant portion of your name as a sole proprietorship you need to file a certficate of assumed business name in the local county recorder's office.

Do your tax stuff with IN Dept Revenue.
