Full Version: For those who shoot RAW How Many Compact Flash Cards?
OpenSourcePhoto > YA wanna FIGHT! > RAW vs. JPEG
Carli
We are thinking of switching to RAW and I was curious how many Compact Flash Cards you normally go through? We usually shoot a lot at a wedding, maybe around 2000-3000 images. Anyone shoot around that much and if so how many cards do you go through?

Or do you upload them while on site somewhere.

Thanks. We have a wedding Saturday and I am hoping to shoot RAW for it.

I have about 40 gigs. But probally don't shoot more than 20 Gigs on both my 5D and 30D in RAW.
Brady
12-30gb for 1200-3000 raw 10mp files... 12 if it is a short wedding or light shooting day and 30 if it is a long wedding or heavy shooting day

i shoot raw+jpg small and just upload the jpg files for the notebook slide show

EDIT: I get roughly 60 photos per gb

i have 60GB of cards and use roughly 40 or 50 at a wedding. We don't resuse the cards and we download a copy of the files that day on a laptop // then use for a slideshow and it keeps 2 copies of photos.

Right now we use a 30d and 20d and a Nikon d70 (Joe is switching from the Nikon to the 20d as soon as he builds up a few more lens).

I konw the 5d files are a lot bigger, will I most likely not need quite as many gigs with the cameras I have?

haha, me too!
I have a 5D and shoot around 120 images/hour. I have 12 GB of cards and have not shot more than 10GB. I will probably pick up another 8-12 because I am starting to do multi day weddings and I will start doing RAW+small jpg for slideshows.
I should mention that is what I shoot, an assistant or second shoots in addition to my 12GB.

I have about 32gb of 4gb cards and download all images to my laptop and a wolverine 120gb imageviewer... I end up re-using another 4-8 gb's especially if the second shooter is using my cards as well. I shoot everything raw.

I use 2 5d's and my second shooter shoots with a 5d as well. I also use a d70.

We're actually on the lower end of the spectrum with that, we each carry 4 gigs of cards and then offload onto our laptop and then backup onto a portable hard drive. This way we are guarded against a random card failure, or the possibility of card misplacement, plus the photos exist in multiple locations at all times. Shooting RAW with a 30D yields about 100-120 photos per card, and we normally shoot about 3000 per event.
