This is WAY overdue, but I'm finally going to look into hiring an accountant. I've been doing my taxes and finances to the best of my abilities for years, but my abilities weren't shaped by any sort of schooling. I need to get my business set up legally, as I'm just filing as a sole proprietor now and I'm sure I'm skipping over many important steps.

I'm looking for any advice on choosing an accountant, as well as Chicago accountants to try. If you'd rather not post their information, you can email me: emily@emilydewan.com

Thanks!
Emily

My accountant is not in Chicago (nor is she where I live), but she is fabulous and her prices are incredible. Her name is Lori Hudson and her email address is: compasol@hotmail.com. Her fedex account makes everything super easy.

Hi Emily,
My wife is a CPA so I know a bit about it.
First, and most importantly, you want someone who specializes in small businesses. Tax codes are very complicated and there are different things that will benefit different types of businesses. Next, make sure they are a real CPA, not a book keeper or a tax planner, and that their license is current or else they will not know the latest about the yearly changes to law. You should choose an accountant in your state so that they know the ins and outs of your state tax code. Lastly, and this goes without saying, you want a person with real integrity. An accountant who bends the rules is not doing you any favors.
Keep in mind that a good accountant is NOT someone who gets you a refund! My wife cracks up how one client will come in who made $50K and gets 1K refunded and will be all happy then her next client comes in who made $10 million and they will be all upset when they have to pay $50K. Ridiclous!
I would ask around at your chamer of commerce and with other small businesses. Interview several and choose who you like.
