•Studio512•
Do you think the name works?

Soooo, I'm trying to become a 'legitimate' business.
I've been working under my own name for quite some time. Nothing official.
I've been wanting to get a business name that can grow with me a bit.
I do videography and photography, though I don't know to what extent over time.
The number 512 has been very prevalent in my life - hence the name.
I mostly shoot weddings.

Any thoughts are appreciated. By the way, if you had any inclination to use that name already (please don't), it appears we'll have to go into business together because that would be bizarre.
matt.lee
I'm in the camp that thinks you should use your own name. But if not, you need to be able to explain why studio512 should be your name.

A few years ago, I struggled with the same issue, and almost settled on a studio and a number... then I started noticing all the salons with studio #'s. How will people know you aren't a recording studio, or a salon, or a...
Katie-6 of Four
We are number fans. We wanted our business to stand out. "6 of Four Creations" BUT there has to be a reason. Our first date was on April 6th...the 6th of the fourth month...that is where it comes from. Most girls melt at that part. It makes us more sweet and romantic. It's our lives, it's our passion, it's our love...so it works for us. Definitely have a reason. Some good friends of mine at "the 215" in Gadsden, AL have a good name...close to yours. Theirs is from the first street their business was on...215 st. So, if you go for something like that, it's ok, but you need a story to back it up, bcause they will ask. smile.gif
Annie of Oz
Ummm....I dunno Eddie. Sort of sounds like a nightclub to me. ha ha ha That's probably because we have a local club caled Studio 52, and then of course there's the world famous 'Studio 54' nightclub. Also, numbers seem a little too 'cold' and impersonal to me....or maybe that's just me!

I personally LOVE your name here.... Ebojo. Sounds great, and looks super cool in text. It all depends on your style and what you wish to portray about your business with the name. May I put in a vote for Ebojo Studio. Seriously....I LOVE it!

What does everyone else think?

ebojo STUDIO

Just an idea. By all means tell me to shut up and get on with my work LOL

P.S. The name Studio512 is significant for me and actually a name I've wanted to use for many years. It's just coming down to register it and I'm wanting to hear from the pros.
matt.lee
Eddie,

I know you said Studio512 is significant to you, can you tell brides why? Will you explain it on your website? People WILL ask you why, all the time. If you choose it, be prepared for the questions.
Matt Yeaton
If you like it, go for it. BUT...is the URL available as well? That was the deciding factor for me when I was changing my business name a year ago.
vitae
Eddie,
My personal opinion FWIW........

If you like Studio512, then go with it. But maybe add a tagline that helps identify what you do, or otherwise helps add meaning to the name.

Personally, I've only had a handful of people ever ask me what my business name meant, and honestly? They were other photographers. wink.gif

the real Carrie V
I kinda like it, personally... sounds urban, modern, and sexy!

You'd better have the studio personality to back it up!! wink.gif
J*I*L*L HIGGINS
I think it could be cool if you have some way of making it really known that it is photography and not a hair salon. Definitely has good potential I think!

Do you actually have a studio you work out of or are you working out of your home?
Maybe I'm being petty here, but it sounds odd to have "Studio" in your business name if you work out of a bedroom in your home. People might be disappointed when they meet you in person thinking otherwise.

Not sure who you were asking this question to, but here's my experience.

Sure, some people don't get it that we're not an actual storefront (yet). But when I explain that everything we do can be done on location, it's never been a problem. It's all in how you present it.
stephen seward
IMO, bride's do not need, or want to know why 512 has significance to you or anyone for that matter. I think it's simple and easy to remember. However, I prefer to use my name across the board, that way when people refer to my business it is automatically connected to me as a person.
steve mac
I would go with the studio 514 name, I bet your never asked by anyone you book why you are called that.

eddie has the personality to pull off ANY name. trust me. thumbsup.gif

use it all!

ebojo studio512.

we work out of our homes (Brenda and I) - no one has ever questioned the location. (not having a 'studio' space, as our 'studio' is on location.

we are often asked about our name...

we tell people how we brain stormed and came up with it - it is from the romantic languages and means 'the most beautiful'. we strive to live up to our name.

Where's that darned blushing emoticon? You're too sweet, Robin.
Thanks, everyone. In the off-chance a bride asks me, I will be able to give them story (there's more to it, but I've seen it...everywhere...since I was a kid. It's also the numerical representation of my initials, EAB - just to whet your appetites).

I think it's very valid to consider the fact that I'm one of the little guys and not a big studio. I've thought about it and decided that it will be more about how I approach it, as was mentioned above.

Oh, and I recently purchased the domain....just in case. Feel free to try it: www.studio512.com. You'll notice that I simply go by my name and sort of qualify it with "The Images of..." So I guess here's my next question:

If I were to make •studio512• my official business name, would I register the whole thing? e.g. studio512: The Images of Eddie Bojorquez

Also, does it matter (legally) exactly how I write it out? For example:
•studio512• or Studio 512 or Studio FIVE:12

I'm asking right in terms of how I would present it to others, write it in official forms, display it in ads. If I registered studio512, would I be causing problems if I decided to write it a slightly different way for aesthetic or memorial (is that the right word?) purposes?

Thanks, you guys, for all your helpful input!

I agree with Robin, Eddie-
you have the personality to pull off any name-

so choose what you like-
you have to live with it-
have you thought through to logos?

for me? maybe studio512 sounds perhaps large and impersonal?

Think about google too. Seth Godin talks about this a lot.

Studio 512 already has a few companys with that name. Just something to think about.

Awww...shucks. You guys sure know how to make my head swell!

I do tend to agree that it sounds a bit impersonal, but I want to try to overcome that by giving potential clients realistic expectations about who I am and where I'm headed. I have much work ahead of me in regards to branding and the look of my website. I'm pretty sure you'll see questions from me on that soon. : )

You know what's funny? The main one that comes up is an architecture firm. I love architecture - studied it for three years. Good point, though.

Thanks!

I'll repost this part just so it doesn't get lost in the mix:

Legally speaking...

If I were to make •studio512• my official business name, would I register the whole thing, including a 'tag line'? e.g. studio512: The Images of Eddie Bojorquez

Also, does it matter (legally) exactly how I write it out? Difference in capitals, symbols, spaces? For example:
•studio512• or Studio 512 or Studio FIVE:12

Do those questions make sense?
Leann
When you register the name, you have to stick with it like it is so don't include the tag line.

Just go with studio512 or whatever, without dogs in front and behind because legal forms don't allow for special characters.

I'm LifeSpring Photography and on my form for business identity, it's listed as LifeSpring Photography. Not "LifeSpring Photography, where moments grow up to be memories" or "LifeSpring Photography, We're just your style" or whatever.

The tag line may change over the years, but the business name is be yours forever.

If you're writing it on something legal, then you have to do it just like it is on your biz identity forms. And if you don't want to confuse clients, you'll also stay consistent.

At the bank, they don't give a darn what's on the checks -- just as long as they get to deposit the money. So your clients can write it however they want on their payments to you... it's just easier to hand the teller a stack of checks that say "LifeSpring Photography" than it is to hand her a stack that has three "LifeSpring" and one "Wrightsman Photo" and another that says "Leann Wrightsman" Kwim?

Leann

Thanks, Leann Witt Kolean Thompson Wrightsman...
