Full Version: Which one to buy?

Hey guys!

Okay, so I do not currently have a desktop for my business (I do all my work on my laptop), but I am looking to get one.

Here's the deal, I know MAC does some great things, and is awesome for picture editing, but I have not really ever used one. Anyone have any reasons why I should switch to Apple?

I currently am using HPs, but PC people, any better PCs that I should be using?

Basically, what should I buy?

I need some help! Argue all the issues for me, please!

Thanks, you guys are the best,
Becky

Well, if you're happy with your PC, then there's not a compelling reason to switch. I have both. HP is the biggest PC seller right now. Dell is #2, but you can get similarly configured systems from both companies. Just keep an eye on how much ram you can add to your system. I like my Mac, and it's my primary computer now, but it took me awhile to get aquainted with the new operating system, and it cost a bit to buy new software (with the exception of Photoshop - free cross platform switch).

An argument for PC's is often that if your happy with it why change.
The reality is nobody is really happy with viruses, constant warnings and other bugs.
I was PC, and as soon as I went to mac the idea of going back was joke.

Now personal preference has something do do with this, and no computer is perfect. But macs are more reliable, don't get spyware and viruses, and are in general much less annoying.

The reality is that most people who have PC's just don't know how much better they cold have things, and are used to it. Very few go back to PC once they go mac.

Try a mac. I think you'll like it.
Just my .02 worth though thumbsup.gif

I use a Macbook Pro laptop, but still use a PC desktop that I built myself. I would love to switch to a Mac Pro desktop, but the system I want is $6000! Do you know what kind of PC I can build for even half that price! Don't get me wrong, when I get the cash I will definitely be switching over, but I just cannot afford that at this time (and probably not anytime soon)! Anyways, to answer the OP question, if you can afford the Mac, then go for it. You won't regret it.

We have macs only at home and at work pcs. My husband is the one who uses both platforms and he says if he could he'd change all computers at work with macs. Every couple of years he has to replace his pcs because of one problem or another. The other day one even started to smoke! LOL.

Go see Simple Photo Minute on the Boutwells, they build their own from PCs.

Otherwise, I vote Mac.

Get Mac. You will thank me later. If you can't afford Mac Pro, get iMac 24".
They will put Vista in new boxes which is very fresh and buggy. I have never seen a new OS from MS that was exceptable at the first release. Only after a first service pack.

That's probably the best argument at the moment. Vista WILL BE very buggy. OS X won't be. Seriously, just go Mac. You won't regret it. smile.gif

I vote Mac. I was a very big PC user till I discovered OS X. I hated Apple when it was OS 9, but now with OS X its a different story. Mac all the way baby, you won't ever regret it.

"mac has issued a salutation - cancel or allow?"

haha

+1 votes for apple. I too was a hardcore PC user until about 9 months ago... once you go mac, you'll never go back.

I've actually priced it out part for part, and an exact same Mac system is often the same price or cheaper than the exact same PC system. Here's three price comparisons:

http://www.systemshootouts.org/

I've heard many people claim they could build a Mac system for half the price, but when the specs were matched part for part, I've never seen Macs more than 10% more expensive and, as the articles above show, sometimes cheaper. Also, don't upgrade your RAM or hard drives through Apple. Buy them separately and install them yourself to save money. Also consider resellers such as MacConnection.com, who often have very good deals. I almost never buy anything directly from the Apple Store.

Personally, I'm in the same boat as you: I have a PC desktop and Mac laptop. When it's time to replace, my desktop will be a Mac. While it's not perfect and it does crash from time to time (no matter what everyone else tells you, Macs do indeed crash, especially running Bridge or early versions of Aperture), it's the most stress-free computer system I've worked on and, even if it were really much more expensive than equivalent PCs, it would save me money in better productivity.

Basically, nobody writes viruses for them. I don't know whether the security truly is that much better on OS X (someone with more in-depth knowledge would have to comment), but I've never had to sweep my Mac for viruses or any other malware since I purchased it about a year ago. Compare that with a PC which I need to check weekly, if not daily.

I would love to go to Mac, but I just can't afford it. I built a beefy pc (Hp by the way for my laptop and desktop and I love it) and it would have cost me more than 3 times that to build an equal system for speed and memory on a mac.
Besides the fact that I think going with a system you are familliar with is important. You'll enjoy your new purchase more if you know how to use it to it's full ability.

I'm also on the fence on buying a Mac. I love going to the Apple store and checking out the imacs I'm really falling in love with the 24". A couple of things are holding me back from buying a mac. First I have no idea how to get around it, one of the store clerks took some time to show me a couple of things. Secondly I really hate the mac mouse. I find it very hard to use and it really flares up my carpal tunnel. Can anyone please tell me why the mouse is so annoying or am i the only one noticing this?

Maybe it's because I'm a PC and Mac user, but I can't stand that mouse either. For one, it's not nearly as ergonomic as the aftermarket ones, and two, it's missing a button! laughing.gif
