I'm working with a start up company (not in photography) that is needing assistance in albums so I, decided to jump in and help out. I am going to be printing 25,000-50,000 customized flushmount albums a year. I need to know what ways I you would recommend printing them. (I do know that I don't want the peel and stick.) Should I print them inhouse (with hired help) and do the binding myself? If so what type of equipment do I need. Or is there a particular company that you would recommend that could do them for me. I will need them to stay at around $35 per album if at all possible?

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm excited to hear what suggestions that you guys have.

Kim
p.s. If you don't have the answer but know someone I can talk to, please pass along the info. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hmmm, no help on the albums but at a 1.75 mil a year clip (50,000 * $35), be sure to use your amex. Then you can fly all of osp to the Bahamas smile.gif

How many pages? what size? What type of paper? Folded or seam?
Are they all different or the same item mass produced? How much are you willing to invest upfront?
Thats 137 albums a day, 365 days a year.
You may be able to keep them within 35 an album, but probably after 50K or more worth of startup equipment.

The current issue of Professional Photographer magazine just did an article about this outfit...you might consider them...

Books are printed overseas (China, Taiwan? can't recall exactly where) but your per book cost drops to around $4 each w/ qty's over 5,000.

Yeah, Michael Reichman a huge landscape guru used them for a book and highly reccommended them.

Overseas = cheap, but big potential headaches with quality control and delivery schedules.

Using offset printing like Asuka would be the way to go - which is also apparently what 100books does.

The real question is how many of each album layout do you need? If these are all unique, you need an automated system like Asuka offers.

Number of pages is optional. We would like to offer a traditional size and a mini size. Folded vs. Seam........doesn't really matter I don't think but would preferr that the album and pages lay flat.

investment: these people don't have a problem with investing money. I just need to provide options.

Tell me more...........please. smile.gif

We are going to need anywhere from 1-5or6 of each book. In some cases more. Do you have any contacts at Asuka?

For less than 10 copies of each (less than 100 really), I don't think you can keep the cost to $35 unless you do at least the binding in-house.

You're trying to do something that's right in between what Asuka (or Digi-Labs or Illuma) and Lulu/Blurb do - and what they do is based on the short-run technology that's available. Asuka et al is too expensive for you and Lulu/Blurb won't have the right quality level.

But if you had standard covers printed up and did simple back-to-back binding (like Vision Art), I suppose you could do it in-house without too much trouble.
