Forgive me if this is already posted here somewhere. Anyways, I'm looking into getting insurance on my camera gear. I would like the insurance to cover theft, damage, etc etc. Even damage if I'm being an idiot and drop my own camera or something.
Got a quote from State Farm today. They said it would be $240.00/year + a $100 deductible. This seems a little steep to me.
Any suggestions or advice?
Who do you use? How much do you pay?

Rebekah...I've said this before, but make sure you're getting a commercial policy...a lot of local brokers tried to sell me a standard inland marine policy and they swore it would cover all my gear...only if it's specifically a commercial policy

My homeowner's policy has an added policy for my cameras and computers. Probably not a commercial policy like Stephen recommends. That price sounds great to me.

Oh wow! Thanks for all the responses. Okay, I guess I'm just a cheapo

I thought I read somewhere on here that someone got their insurance for $150/year. Guess that might be too good to be true.
Jumanji-
Is this automatically covered in your homeowners, or are you paying extra to have this extra coverage on camera and computers? Hope my question make sense...
Steven-
Okay, I will check with the agent I am talking to if it's commercial. THanks for the tip.

I have my equipment insurance through State Farm too. I also have my renters and car insurance, so that may helpe with price. It was $193 for a year for $10,000 worth of stuff. I'm pretty sure they said there's no deductable and it covers theft, damage (even if I drop it) and all. They know that it's all equipment for my business, I think it would be cheaper if it wasn't, though it does say it's a personal articles policy. If you have a good agent, State Farm is great for paying claims fast. Fortunately I haven't had to use the coverage for any camera stuff! But it is nice not to have to worry so much about someting getting damaged.

that sounds like a personal areticles policy to me, mine was 200 a year for that. I would highly suggest going with someone else for your biz coverage, State Farm ahs a lot of loop holes that if you aren't aware of will really screw you.
Hill and Ushire or Tom Pickard's Group insure are a lot better places to go with. I think my quote from group insure was for 510 a year. When you see all that it covers compared to just gear coverage, its a steal of a deal, and many places now require you to have liabilty coverage anyways.

Thanks Corey. I will be sure to look into any loop holes here.

The big one for me and why I left them was that they don't cover outside the US. Most of the time thats no big deal, but I went in there a week or so before a trip to the Dominican Republic, and told them that upfront. They said normally they won't insure right before a trip, but because I had gone in before to get info and a quote, they went ahead and wrote the policy. A month or so later when I got the policy in the mail, I noticed the clause that said I wasn't covered over seas.

They also didn't want to honor a claim saying that I had pro gear so I must be a pro, but I was able to show them my student ID and they finally honored it.

Captain Crunch! I love Captiain Crunch! I tear up the roof of my mouth when I eat it 'cause I love it so much, I eat it too fast! The dorms had 55 gallon barrels of Captain Crunch in the cafeteria. I gained 10 lbs that year!
