I have a client who wants me to travel 200 miles in total (there and back).
I've told him that I would gladly do so, but that he'd have to pay for travel fees.
Can you tell me what the norm is in this regard?
I drive a minivan, so it's not the worst gas guzzler, but its up there.
Any suggestions???

Jennifer, I charge $0.45 per km and have never had any complaints from clients. I know other local photogs that charge $0.85 per km!! and one that won't leave town for less than $250...

Thanks you coralee.
Your fee is about what I expected.
I really appreciate your help.

It depends on how much they want you - but if travel exceeds 10% of the package price, you're in danger of losing out to more local competition.

It depends. On the one hand, some people don't charge at all...their package prices are such that they can absorb driving 200 miles. Others charge (obviousl7=y). You could use the federal mileage rate, which is intended to account for the cost of gas, as well as wear and tear on your car. I believe it's currently around $0.50/mile in the states. I don't know about Canada, but you could look into that...
If you do decide to charge, you should think about how far you would travel *without* charging. You don't want this person to have to pay for those miles (or maybe you do), but if you're willing to go 40 miles each direction without charging, take that into account. It probably depends on where exactly you are.

I include up to 200 miles (100 from my location) of driving in my services. Anything after that is $.40/mile. This, of course, is based on driving v flying. Once I calculate that it's either not cost effective or just too time consuming, I'll hop on a plane.
(I've been waiting to use that one!)

I charge for travel fees that are more than 60 minutes (not miles!) from my studio. Here is exactly what I say on all my pricing info:
• Prices do not include travel fees or shipping (where applicable). The first hour both ways is always free. Travel fees in New England are $150 for every hour of travel (each direction). For example, if you are 90 minutes away from Portsmouth NH, your travel fee would be $150. If you are 2 hours away, it would be $300, etc. Travel fees outside of New England start at $1500, please inquire.
