Full Version: What do I need to do to get my RAW 5D file to show up in Vista?
OpenSourcePhoto > YA wanna FIGHT! > RAW vs. JPEG

I am so unsure of where to post this, but since it is about RAW I am going to try it in this forum.

I have just upgraded to a new pc with Vista. At this point I cant view my RAW files from the 5D. I tried to download the latest:
Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP

It is not working yet, and maybe there needs to be a different one for Vista or not.
What do I need to do to get my RAW 5D file to show up in Vista?

I'm not sure, are you saying you can't see the files period or that they aren't showing up as image thumbnails? I just use Picasa2 for browsing in a hurry, it works pretty well and is free!

This is a sad but intresting read about digital images and vista:

I read the information about Vista and tagging the files. Interesting!
I hope they do come up with a fix soon for that. I do like the look of vista and with this new computer it is nice to have a computer that runs fast again. Reason for upgrade was super slow with the 5D files and not having enough RAM. Getting vista, was just a "bonus" at the time I needed a new computer. I suppose I could try to load xp on this one instead.
However I am guessing this is just for when specifically tagging the information in the metadata? If that is all, I can probably deal with that and just make sure I always have back up copies like suggested.

As for the files, they are not showing up as image thumbnails. The files are there, just not viewable as they were on my old computer before transferring them.

I did download the xp version that was available. I guess I will perhaps have to reboot the computer and see if they show up.

Thanks for help though!

use bridge until vist is ready

Microsoft left the installation of the codec for viewing the raw files as thumbnails up to the camera manufacturer. Nikon already released their codec. We are waiting for Canon to do the same.

Well this Vista thing is turning out to be one big joke for me. I took the computer back to compusa yesterday asking for help to install xp on it.
Main reason for this is our printer is not compatible(dell) and I cant view the raw picures in the m y pictures folder. I can of course view them in the bridge, but I still prefer to also be able to view them in the my pictures folder.
So it is turning into a big ordeal, Vista computers are apparently built with 64 bit, while xp computers are 32 bit. So the compusa tech claimed yesterday that the motherboard was not compatible with xp. At this point I am just waiting to see what will happen.

Meanwhile I dont have a computer to work on, just my old lagging one. So frustrating. So I am sure Vista will be great ca six months from now when all the bugs have been worked out. For now I am not so impressed with it. mad.gif

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend to early adopt new Windows OS. Simply because, the third party support from companies that makes your printer, makes your video cards, makes your sound cards, makes your scanner, etc...needs to release stable drivers for the new operating system. Now, that said...what your tech told you at CompUSA is not entirely correct. Just about all new processor has the 64bit instruction set in them. (64bit versus 32bit is really processory dependant, not motherboard) However, that does not mean you have to run a 64bit operating system. In fact, Vista, like XP, has a 32bit version and a 64bit version. The 32bit version will run on all the modern processor. The 64bit version will only run on 64bit enabled processor. In the future, once all the applications are compiled specifically for 64bit computing, or when one need to access memory more than 4GB, then we can see the benefits of 64bit operating systems. Right now, 32bit is find for most of our needs.

All that to say, you can install regular old XP on your computer with absolutely no problem at all, provided you have a valid license of XP. If the tech tells you otherwise, I am sure he is incorrect.
