Full Version: Thinking about running Vista?
OpenSourcePhoto > YA wanna FIGHT! > Mac vs. Windows
Melody
Not that this is the only thing wrong with Vista - I could make a nice long list after running it on the notebook I bought last week that came pre-installed with it (and is now being formatted & having XP installed). You HAVE TO READ THIS ARTICLE before you even consider using it. Vista is bad, bad, bad for photographers!

I'm not a windows fan

but I think as long as you don't process them through microsoft's image processor you'll be fine.
Floyd
Hmmm...I wouldn't be tagging my images with Vista anyway. I use Lightroom or Bridge for all that. Vista upgrade: still a go.
Melody
Aside from the metadata thing (I know most people don't process through that) there are SO many other issues with Vista. I've used that notebook for a week, literally. The ONLY things I've installed on it are Photoshop and Firefox and I've removed all the unnecessary crap it came pre-loaded with.

Remember the blue screen of death? I hadn't seen it in SO many years I almost forgot about it.... I've seen it three times this week.

I can't use almost HALF of the software I normally use.

Vista is going to be great... one day. But it's not right now.

Wow thanks for the info! That's good to know.

Give them another decade, and I'll bet everything will be squared away.

Melody, come to the en(light)ened side. Yes, come into the light. I switched in Dec and haven't regretted it one bit. Make the switch. Just do it!

vista even though released is still in its beta stages. the full versions with ALL content like in xp wont be out until the second part of this year.

u got to hand it to microsoft they did a pretty good copying technique of macs tiger, and even brought it out a few months before leopard came out! hard luck! just another reason why mac is such a better machine for anyone working with media.

plus vista will still get viruses and all the system errors etc. my friend has it on both his notebook and desktop and well they look nice, ott if you ask me, but it still does its 'system error' and freezing fun!

o and i posted on another post one guy got a beta of leopard! the new features of timesyncing and squares rocks. cant wait to the final release!

I've got a Mac laptop and a Windows desktop runnning XP.

I upgrade the Apple OS on the day the new version is released.

I'm going to give Vista a good six months before I consider an upgrade.

Honestly, I was *this* close to buying a MBP when I realized I'd have to buy all new software if I did. That kinda killed it for me. Maybe one day wink.gif

I really don't like the crippling of the video output for playing DVD's unless you are using an HDMI monitor. If you are just using DVI and plan to watch videos from your computer, you'll only get 1/4 resolution scaled up. How horrible is that? The studios got to microsoft and had them enable full resolution output ONLY if it was output via an encrypted HDMI connection.

There may be cool things with vista, but I don't plan on touching it until I absolutely have to. I don't want to make my future quad core run like a Pentium 3. smile.gif

This was the same for me. Of course my dh is chiming in that he wants me to buy a Mac. Not yet, but next computer probably will be. I am so frustrated with my new vista computer right now. You can read my lastest issue with downgrading it to an xp in the RAW vs Jpeg forum. I am so not impressed with Vista as of now. I am sure once the kinks are worked out it may turned out to be great but it is not right now.

vista vista vista! itll take ages to fix it, and its huge!!! mac os x is 2.8gb without the extra accessories (ilife, printer drivers etc) but vista is a wopping 8gb uncompressed! ouch!

graphic drivers and video card drivers are being released one by one! best method if you get really stuck is what i do, well i like it. i have a macbook pro 80gb, a few months later the new dual core 2 came out! a real kick in the bum! but then i started pining alitle for some windows so i bought parallels, and bought an external hard drive only recently! and installed windows xp on fat 32 so that it will eb readable and writable with mac, but as its going through mac os x through the internet! no viruses!! smile.gif so basically it doesnt matter what you use.

i sell macs and yeah unless you know a mac busienss agent or dont have to pay tax in your area it costs alot! so use a site called www.onsale.com which do deals on virtual pc for a g5 or parallels for a notebook!
also if you know of any ngo or vat free registered, how it goes in the UK, i know for the states you can go to a website called www.techsoup.com and theyll let you buy as much software once in the year for really cheap. eg. the full adobe cs2/macromedia studio 8 suite costs 160$. therefore your windows problem is solved! keeps everything you have legal! hope this helps! smile.gif

Well, I think it's purty purty. I got a new HP notebook with a 17" screen that looks like hi-def TV so I could do the slideshow at my first wedding this summer. Vista is working fine for me. Just using PSCS2 and Picasa. Love the hibernation and the desktop - very graphic.

My previous notebook died a few weeks ago and I was forced to buy a new notebook. It is running vista and at 1st it is damn near impossible to see how this will ever work. I had all my software working perfect on xp and now I have to work like crazy and search now for "compatible with vista." I do see it become a great os but it is very aggravating. I have gotten most of my software running but it still is going to be a slow slow slow process. But I can see the light. For now.....

Now, I use both OS X and XP, but from what I've seen and used of Vista, it looks like a jumbled mess of a design. Maybe it's just because I'm not used to it, but it looks UGLY. It's trying so hard to look sexy, but ends up completely inelegant. XP at least looks visually well designed from my point of view. I like OS X, I like XP. Vista...we'll see if my heart warms to it.
