I have just read multiple negative posts on DWF about 17-55 f/2.8 with IS Canon lens. According to many members of DWf mentioned lens has a major quality flaws, especialy with built in image stabilizator that brakes down just after few months from the date of purchase.
I just wonder if any of you is aware of that problem?

Don't have one, but I've heard the same things about that lens. That it's not built very well and kind of feels "cheap." It's not an "L" lens, is it?

I have it, and like the quality. But the IS did stop working after a couple months. I sent it back to Canon to be fixed, and got it back two weeks later. The IS worked, but it wouldn't auto focus. So I sent it back again, and after numerous calls, I finally received it back over 2 months later. This is the first I've heard of others having problems, so I'm interested in hearing of more experiences.

I've had it for almost a year with no problems...if you're used to L lenses, it will feel like a toy, you really have to baby it....but there's nothing else that can give me what this lens can.

I've had my 17-55 since Oct without any problems. Thanks for the info. Good to know in case it happens to me.

I'm also looking at getting this lens. Anyone else use the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS? The 16-35 L 2.8 would be my next option. I'd rather get the extra 20mm range and pocket the extra $600 if I could.

It is no brainer if you have the money get the 16 -35.

Yeah from my understanding, just remember that the 17-55 doesn't work on any camera 5d and up. (canon)

not sure I would say that...try shooting at one of the cave churches here where you're 1/10 @ISO 1600 than we'll compare shots

I owld not waste my money on an S lens. I want my gear to be interchangable...if some one ever goes from a 20d to a 5d then that lens is useless.

I've heard of at least a few now that have had this lens and have had problems with it. There seems to be major QA problems for this particular EF-S lens which is something that would make me hesitant if considering it for purchase.

From the experiences that I've heard, the IS "wobbles" at a certain focal length, and has serious issues with the 20D.

Cheers,

I have it and dont like it... I had a night wedding a few weeks ago and had the IS on and still couldn't get a good image at 1/30 you can totally see the shake. It also has a ton of dust in the lens, and it's only 2 months old. Lets just say it's going back to canon and then I am going to sell it. smile.gif
