I read a great book in college called "Civility" by Stephen L. Carter and it had so many great quotes in it but this one always stuck with me, probably because I see how easy it is for me to get in the mindset of thinking "my way is the right way" and how that restricts so many opportunities in my life.

"Civility requires that we listen to others with knowledge of the possibility that they are right and we are wrong."

You're wrong. That's a bunch of crap.

Wow. This may be the hardest thing to do in life.

I mean, I am always right smile.gif

But seriously, the ability to converse with someone openly is the cornerstone in any relationship. Communication is worthless, if it is one-sided. And communication can be one-sided, even if two people are talking.

Very, very true.

I struggle everyday to get over my ego and listen to others. The ability to really listen to others enables tremendous growth as a person. But more times then not I catch myself thinking with my own interests in mind.

My goal is to not achieve a state where I am always listening, because that may be impossible, but perhaps I can make sure that when I do catch myself not listening I communicate clearly with that other person.

The only thing I've ever been right about was when I realized that I don't know jack-sh*t about nothin'.

(Disclaimer - An-toe-effing-knee-no started the whole sailor talk today...I'm just very impressionistic...)

I tend to lean more toward the "if you agree that I'm right then you're right too" camp so thanks for posting the quote. It is something that I need to try to always remember.

One of my favorite songs from years ago just came on my iPod today...
"Reaching" by Carolyn Arends.
I hadn't heard it in years probably.

One of my favorite verses goes like this:
QUOTE
I should not have thought it strange
That growing causes growing pains
'Cause the more we learn, the more we know
We don't know anything.

I've had my share of growing pains smile.gif

DJ: your quote is right on.

I like Covey's "Seek first to understand, then to be understood", which, IMHO, is just a restatement of the word's of Christ, re-codified, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself". [Mark 12:31]

Christ, the ultimate in civility! (Smile)

I once thought I was wrong...but I found out I was wrong...because I was right....I think... oh well...
