Full Version: Travelling by plane

Hello everyone,

I may have the opportunity to shoot a wedding out of the state. For those of you who travel with all of your stuff, what can I expect at the airport, I will need all the usual gear, laptop, cameras, tripod etc. etc... And since this could be my only "world" travel buying a new $400 camera bag doesn't seem feasible, just to put all my equipment in. If you haveany suggestions and packing techniques I would truly appreciate it!

Thanks!

Congrats on the possible booking! When I travel I bring all my stuff and it fits into my Temba backpack bag. That bag is awesome and it's like $250. I use that for everything (traveling or not). It really holds everything I need including laptop. I don't bring tripods...that could get tricky unless they get real small and you can pack them in a suitcase. Airport security is just like normal. I've never had any problems.

Congratulations!!

Just be careful of your airline's extra baggage regulations. When doing out-of-state weddings, like Chris, I travel with my huge camera backpack (Tamrac Pro 9) which I carry on the plane with me. Sometimes (depending on the wedding) I travel with my hard case (Pelican 1660), which I always have to pay an additional $80 per flight to travel with. I have a few more out-of-state weddings coming up, and I 1) hate lugging the big heavy box around and 2) I don't like paying $80 per flight, so I am going to purchase a soft-sided Pelican case (Pelican PCS104) that is lighter, it is within the airlines' limits and won't cost me extra $$.

Most of the time I don't have any problems, but I once had my case completely pulled apart and searched by one of those TSA people. She wouldn't let me help, or even let me instruct her as to where things should return back to. I was instructed that if I even wanted to watch her re-pack my case, that I needed to stand back 5 feet and not say a word!!!! Needless to say, I was livid as I watched her re-pack my case completely the wrong way. UGH.

Airlines are now required to let photographers travel with a camera bag IN ADDITION to the normal carry-on items, as long as it meets the dimensional requirements.

Good luck!

Brian,

That's awesome about carrying camera stuff as well as carry on....Can you point me to an "official" place where it says that so I can know for sure? How/where did you hear about that?

This is what I like about this forum, Thank guys for the information, I did look into the tenba D-17C series I saw one for only 200.00

I may end up getting one just because its nice to have all in one and carry it around.

yeah that bag is incredible. The only unavoidable downer is that it's really really heavy when you get all your gear in it. When I went to Chicago this last weekend that bag was PACKED and SOOO heavy! I couldn't fit another thing in there if I tried! I could barely get it closed!

Let us know how it works out....

Yea That Tenba bag is sick! ...it is heavy though! I justify not working out because I have to lug that thing around!!!

Thanks Brian. That's great. I didn't like that one clause though that said,

"Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft.  Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport."

I'm assuming that means most airlines will say "no." Have you been able to carry 3 things on a plane since 9/11?

(It's funny as a side note, before 9/11, you could take WHATEVER you wanted on a plane. I remember taking two guitars, my backpack, and my suitcase. After 9/11 the rule never changed, just the way that they enforce it did!) smile.gif

I'm not surprised:
