I have been researching this for a couple of days and can't figure it out. I am looking for a med/small softbox to put on my Canon 580 flash. Any recommendations?
I am confused about the set up. Are there softboxes with openings in the back to fit different flashes? Or do you have to buy a specific ring to adapt it? Does anyone have a picture of how this looks.
I am currently using PocketWizzards to fire it bare of with a Fong Dong, but I would like to soften it a lot more.
I'm all ears.

I just use an umbrella on my off camera flash. I find that even with my old school Agfatronic flash (with a GN of 220!) a softbox saps too much power. A 60 inch umbrella is cheap and does the trick. I pick up umbrellas used for $10-20. I have a tendency to dirty them or break them so I have a few.
For a hybrid umbrella/softbox that is easier to transport and fits a flash check this out:

check out the westcott apollo softboxes...they're made to fit onto anything...
I also agree that a 60" shoot through umbrella will do the trick just fine for 95% of what you want to do

I like this thread. What is the collective opinion on the difference between umbrellas and softboxes?

Thanks for the great advice, guys. I really like all the options, but I have decided to go with the Photoflex.
I really liked the look of the lastolite eazybox, but I don't think its available for sale yet. Well, I didn't find it in the bogen site (US distributors for Lastolite).
I can't wait.

the photoflex isn't bad, but keep in mind softness is related to the size of the lightsource...so if you want that nice wrap around soft light with a 12x16 softbox you'll be limited to the size of the subject you'll want to use it with, think torso portraits, headshots, tight stuff . I wouldn't hesitate to add a 60" shoot through which will be great for full length shots, or small groups and still give you the softbox effect for like $30

I was actually considering going for a slightly bigger photoflex. I think it's 16"X19", which is not much bigger.
I am concerned about the ring/hot-shoe adapter not fitting a bigger box. Is that a factor?

I've got this one, it folds nice and up flat and is adjustable to any flash.
