Hi,

Could you advice on some resources (books, tutorials, etc) which would help me to learn basics of Quickbook application related to photography or anything similar. I want to start puting things into Quickbooks but I have no knowledge about how accounting works. I probably don't need to learn whole accounting system, to be able to run photography business as an individual, but some basics.

What I am interested to know is how to manage jobs, accounts, syncing with bank account and categorizing transactions. When I have a deposit for a wedding how do I suppose to distribute it?

Thank you.

I am also in the beginning stages of Quickbooks...i have been using it for only about a month, but did get set up with it with a bookkeeper and am using it for our day-to-day business tracking now. Alex, if you don't have any accounting knowledge, I would recommend having a bookkeeping come in with you and get you set up with the Chart of Accounts, etc. She also could probably help to explain some of the fundamental accounting things you must understand in order to use the program. Thankfully, I have worked in book keeping so I have a general knowledge of how accounting works- Without that though, I think you really want someone to at least get you set up intially, and then check back with you. There are so many things that us normal folks wouldn't normally know, but that a bookkeeper would. Just my 2 cents smile.gif
As far as tutorials, etc, the have tutorial videos actually on the Quickbooks program- I am not in front of it at the moment, but somewhere under the help section there are guided videos, that walk through the basic questions you had (managing jobs, your accounts, etc). They actually have YOU do the actions as you go through the process. This would probably be a really helpful place to start to just get a feel for the system. It helped me a lot.
In addition, there's also a forum dedicated to Quickbooks questions that could be a good place to go. the address is www.quickbooksgroup.com I haven't spent tons of time on here, but its pretty extensive, so I'm sure you could find some good help here!

Hope this helps a little smile.gif

Of course!! Feel free to bother me smile.gif As I said, I am just getting into using Quickbooks myself, but I do have some accounting knowledge which hopefully will get me somewhere rolleyes.gif Feel free to pm if there's specific questions you are wondering about...I am actually going to be talking to nate reynolds this week who has graciously offered to help ME with a few things, so after I talk to him I can pass the knowledge your way smile.gif In the meantime though, feel free to pm with questions and I will do what I can to help!

Those training cds...not sure about them. They could be very worthwhile if you've checked out the tutorials that came with the program and feel its not enough. Maybe somebody else would know more about those...sorry smile.gif

I'm a quickbooks trainer. If anyone wants to sit down for awhile at OSPW, I'd be happy to show you some things. It is so much easier to do in person than over the phone.

I second Katie's suggestion of getting an accountant to get you set up. You really want to make sure that your receivables and payables are hitting the right acounts.

WOW! Lauri is DEFINITELY the person to talk to Alex smile.gif Lori this is great to know! I would love to meet up with you at OSPW, but unfortunately don't think we're going to make it. I'm sure you will be a huge help to others though!
