here's a question... my wife and i are going to travel to canada. we both have passports. my wife's passport has her maiden name on it because when we applied for passports we weren't married yet. question is, does customs check passports only or do they want two forms of id like a drivers lic? if anyone has travelled to a foreign country requireing a passport and knows the answer please let me know.

i don't have to have to apply for another passport for my wife unless i absolutely have to. seems like it's a real pain.

thanks.

After you get married, all you have to do is carry a copy of your marriage license inside your passport. They don't require you to get a new passport. It would be smart to have more than one form of id. When they scan the barcode on your passport it will pull up her "aliases" and will flag her if she doesn't have another form of id. Trust me when I say you do not want your passport flagged. smile.gif

Passport are not required yet for Land or sea travel to and from Canada or Mexico. Only for Air Travel.
They will not be reqired until Jan 2008 or later for land and sea.

And be sure to make two copies of the info page of the Passports, keeping one at home and another one with you in case you lose the actual Passport. Very important safeguard!

She can have her new name stamped on the back page of her passport for future use. Just send the passport and marriage license to the passport agency and they will amend it and send it back to you. I am not sure how safe it is to show your marriage license with your passport. They are getting pretty tough these days!

Actually, they will only do this within 1 year of the issuance of the passport. I got my passport for our honeymoon. Waited until last year to get my name changed on it and it was too late. So I have to pay all over again for a new passport. YUCK!

That's not true...I had my passport made in '99, got married in '03 and had no problem amending mine. Someone is not telling you the truth.

Actually, I think it changed around 2004. Here's the link that shows the info...and I didn't believe it myself and called the passport agency in Philly to verify. So sadly, I'm still waiting to get my new passport because I have to pay for a new one sad.gif

WOW...looks like I hit that one at the right time! That sucks....I wonder what their reasoning is...it is not like they give you a new passport. The just print a stupid note on the back page. That stinks, Beth!

Yeah, it really does stink sad.gif But at least I'll get a brand new passport for my $97 and not just a stamp. If it was just a stamp, I'd be stamping them...with my foot!! smashpc.gif
