I am just brimming with questions about lighting (as I have no formal training other than my parents and grandparents who work with film) and I would like to know if there is any appropriate lighting for an assistant to handle at weddings. I guess I'm talking battery powered - something to hold to the side to provide extra light - continuous light. Sounds like I'm talking about a giant flash light doesn't it....maybe I am.
Any insight would be appreciated. I'm "in the dark" on this one...

get a video light...they are small and light weight and can be attached to a stand fo ease of use....the will run about 200ish + the battery...
flashes also work and that is what most use (i use it at receptions but pull out the video light for other things....I think a video light would be a bit distracting....and they get hot quick, but can be good for certain things like cakes and such...I likeing having a variety of things to use to fit the situtation
