Do you all know if it's possible to color-calibrate a laptop screen? I had thought about the idea of getting a second laptop in the future and using it as our main computer (so that we would only have laptops), but one of the things that I had question about was the issue of whether or not laptop screens could be calibrated for image editing. Anybody have info on that?

Hey Nathan,
Yes, laptop screens may be calibrated. It's always a little more difficult to properly adjust images on a laptop because the viewing angle affects how the image appears. For some helpful information, check out ShootSmarter. Here's the link:

I actually run all of my personal work on a Mac Powerbook latop with an external screen that I use for critical color work. It's awesome, if I am using photoshop, I can have all of my tools on the laptop screen and just the image on my 22" screen. It's really awesome.

So awesome that I wish I had another 22" to go with the first. smile.gif

Hmmm, reaching back into my memory archive from my color management class...laptops can definitely be calibrated, but because of the tempermental liquid crystals you have to calibrate them a lot more often than a CRT. The liquid crystals are constantly changing with any variance in temperature, etc. I think keeping a LCD truly calibrated is quite hard and the equipment needed to do it right...is so pricey! But, alas, still possible.

I have to agree with Tim, I love my 22" LaCie!!!!

I looked on the website given earlier to figure out how to do it, but didn't see anything....Since my laptop is the only computer I have (and I don't have the cash to put down for a external screen quite yet) I am interested in learning how to do this....anyone have a specific software that they have used?

Hey Chris,

I know that Adobe Photoshop used to come bundled with some software (possibly it was even a part of photoshop) that would allow you to visually calibrate your monitor. I'll try and dig around tomorrow on the plane to see if I can figure out if this software still exists in CS.

I know a ton of people who actually do their color corrections on a laptop. It's not the world's most accurate device, but unless you are doing extremely critical color, it should suffice.

Has anyone tried this?
