Full Version: Trying out a new technique

I had a family session booked last evening, it is the middle of summer and the sun was hot, no clouds. So I thought there was no better time to try a new technique I have been putting some thought into the last few days (remember, I'm new to this, so it's "new" for me biggrin.gif )

I took some ordainaryly exposed images for them also - you can see them on the blog, but these were a bit af a departure for me from the 'expose it 100% correctly or else' mentality.

(the couple love them, which is encouraging)

Oh and although I have my own, shooting other peoples kids is really difficult - kudos to those who do it regularly!!

I like em, especially the first 2, but with in the first 1 that the baby's face was also in focus

So what was the technique? I see that you shot into the sun and exposed for the faces...did you use flash at all? I think they are fun though--I love the super saturated feel to them. It really shows the Summer sun.

Just curious what the new technique was you were experimenting with.
You didn't exactly explain what you were trying to accomplish, so I guess it's hard to judge whether or not your technique was successful.
Either way I like the images.

haha - sorry - I should have explained a little better - it seems I'm not only new, I'm stupid too biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Yes shooting into the sun, but also overexposing to get the background white(ish) and not worrying as much about 'perfect exposure' on them (the subject), which I have diligently tried to do since getting the camera

". . . . must make the little line match up to the 0 mark . . . . must make the . . . . " biggrin.gif

Thanks Geneve, these were straight out of camera (exposure was re - adjusted back to what i shot in Bridge as it loves to try to even everyting out in an image (can I turn that off somehow?? it's really annoying!))
I may have to get better at Photoshop, I only use it to resize and add a border smashpc.gif

My biz partner finds this feature annoying too in Bridge. I wish I knew more about it...I would ask all the PS2 gurus about that. I'm sure they know!

yes, you can turn that off. you need to change your camera raw defaults. i'm assuming you shot these raw...

i think there is a post in tutorials about chaning defaults and presets. just make yourself a preset that keeps your exposure the way you want. look under tutorials to see if it's still there. if not we'll get you hooked up.

very nice job, by the way. i really like what you captured!

these are so light. light as in carefree and relaxed. the images really seem to graps the feeling at the time of shooting. i think: one, way to go in branching out of your typical style and try something new. that's how we improve and learn...so kudos for that. two, the technique was executed really well. these are very easy to look at, and really just show the family as loving and happy.

keep quality shots like this coming, and you won't be allowed to say you're 'new' much longer...

thanks for sharing these.

wow - thanks guys for the input, I really appreciate the feedback and the fact you like them makes me very happy. I came here and saw the quality of work I had to try and match in order to just post and it blew me away, within a week here (of scouting blogs and watching posts) I see my work getting so much better and I'm actually thinking about it more 'before' I shoot, if that makes sense.
I mean, I know what I'm walking into now, and I'm framing stuff up in my head before I get to the shoot and then creating situation when I get there.

From this shoot (and todays shoot) I have recieved two paying referals (I'm new still, paying customers are a big deal to me!) a few more and I can get those pocket wizards I'm crying out for

at present I can only thank you all for you assistance and hope to repay this debt of gratitude in time.
