Full Version: What to blog?

I've been maintaining a blog for my site for about 3 months now and my traffic has picked up considerably and it seems to be a popular portion of my website. One thing I'm curious about is hearing fellow OSPers opinions on what we should blog about.

For instance, my business is 3/4 weddings, 1/4 senior portraits but when I'm not working in either of those specialties, I do a lot of fine art photography, everything from character studies to street journalism to still life. I've had a few small gallery showings and feel that it's an important part of who I am as an artist.

However, I'm wondering if that type of work is too far removed from my business that I maybe shouldn't be posting it there. No one's ever objected, and I've received several compliments about it, but I guess I still wonder if the work is too different. Or, is it a case of different being a good thing?

Any advice is appreciated.

well...you certainly don't want to be like everyone else!...I think looking at other peoples differences is interesting.Having your personal work on your blog will set you apart from everyone else smile.gif Just my 2 cents smile.gif

I blog about anything photography related. I don't put too much of my personal life in my blog... unless it has something to do with photography. I did a comercial job for my husbands company's website, and I put in a few images. I don't really care for comercial work, but I think that people like to know what you do. If you do fine art, post some of it because poeple like to see your passion for photography. They like to see that you love photography, and not that it is just a job you are doing.

I blog about workshops I go to, different techniques I have tried, things I have learned, ect. Along with the usual customer stuff.

I think Amber has a great point! Your blog is a little window into your life -- both business and personal. People love hearing about the work you're doing (all types), but an occasional post about family, friends, travels etc give folks a chance to know you as a real person...not just a businessperson.

Just a side note... people really do LOVE to know about my family... all my baby clients are constantly talking about my most recent family stuff... and wedding clients are always bragging to their friends about how cute my kids are! I swear, people are addicted to know about other peoples lives... let them in, and they're hooked!

We have heard a few people say never include stuff on your blog that is too personal and not very business related.

I've got two words for them.......

RASPBERRIES!!!!

From an e-mail just today.........

"I have looked through many photographers' sites and couldn't find what I was looking for. I was relieved to see that you were available, but I can't say I made up my mind for sure until I read though your narrative by the pictures(on the blog). When you spoke about the truth of Christmas, I knew God had finally helped us find our photograher. In case that weren't enough, looking through the pictures from mission work (on the blog) obliterated any doubt. My heart is in Mexico in the mission field. I'm so excited to meet you and to see what comes from this detour which now seems to have been the plan all along!

When can we meet? smile.gif"

That's awesome!! It really goes to show that when you open yourself up to other people, you will find people who really appreciate what you do and what you believe in. It's so much easier to be excited about your job and be inspired when you get great clients that you just know you'll "click" with right away.

I just started blogging. So far I have done a little bit about my family and about some clients. Still learning this. I guess I see it sort of like a diary with out to much personal stuff. My blog is found on my website through the link in my signature.
