This kind of grew in my head out of the "Tilt/Process don't do it" thread, but I was wondering who wanted to answer this.
What makes your (or someone you admire) images stand out from the crowd?
I'll start,
Scarlett definately has a style pretty much to herself, her colours and processing really help distinguish her from others.
also one not from OSP (that I know of) but I admire:
http://www.aperturaphoto.com/blog/appears to get a feel for the couple and then shoot and process the images to match the couple.
another one I really love is:
http://www.asmussenfoto.dk/start.htmlbut there's generally a lot more processing at work in Rene's work
I'm interested to hear other peoples suggestions too.

Jessica Strickland is the one that comes to mind first.
But if you really study people's work you'll start to see images and know its a [b] or a DJ or whoever else.

www.joebuissink.comHe's my current fav...not exactly a hidden find, but his work is fantastic. The scans on his site are not very good, but you get the idea!

I gotta say though, I don't look at other folks work too much. I get my inspiration from classic photographers (Robert Frank, Cartier-Bresson, Julia Cameron, Annie Leibovitz). I also get it from the cinema--big time! Just watch an old Hitchcock or Bergman film when you are feeling uninspired!

LOVE The Image is Found as well - and they are local! I hope to get to meet them one of these days. Did anyone notice on their blog they are planning a workshop for photographers this year? How cool would that be??
OK, and not just because I work for her, but I think
Sara France's images really stand out.

hey that Image is found site certainly has a defining style!!
I love that they'd get eaten alive on other forums I have visited, joined and left.

[standard comment] Uh, I mean really, your dynamic range is lost, you've completely blown the highlights you know, there's just no detail there, although if you give me a second in photoshop I could maybe rescue them for you. Keep trying though, and maybe set your camera exposure control for -45 - Thanks for sharing and look at my site, the images are much more perfect[/comment]

Gritty documentary work, but incredibly moving all the way.
I also love Willy Ronis.

wow...the found image. never come across those kids before. they really capture pure joy better than anyone i've seen. i've seen plenty of shots of happy folks having a great time...but somehow these guys really capture the joy of the moment, not just the moment itself. very, very cool.
thanks for pointing this one out.

I know I'm diging up an old thread here.....but....
What is it about thier images? I can't put my finger on it but all the images PP looks the same. It's the color....not sure how to explain it but all thier images seem to have a unique look to them even it's just a plain candid shot of thier kid. What is it??? it's driving me nuts.....

I know it is hard to pinpoint, their work has what I term a raw edginess with loads of emotion. Their images really tell a story. Nate consistently puts out awesome work, I'm never disappointed.

I understand about the images themselves, but I'm referring to thier post processing. All of their photos seem to have the same look. I like the look...but I'm just curious is to how they make that look. Even their random vacation photos from their blog have that same look to them..indoors and out.

My style was stolen from my friends.
I copied my lighting techniques from Christobal Perez and Matt McGraw. I've bugged David Beckstead for a year and a half about my work. I get down-and-dirty critiques from Scott Lewis.
I am addicted to JPG magazine, Lenswork, and Black and White magazine. I've been an old movie buff since I was a little kid... I suspect that's where I get my love of harsh, directional lighting.
I think photography is about being influenced and stretching out to find yourself. Right now, I feel like I'm starting to take ownership over my style. But I'll always be grateful to the photographers who put themselves out there to give me a hand.
