I'm looking at getting a subscription to a photo magazine(s) and was looking for some referrals. What do you subscribe to?

What I'm looking for is inspiration and learning. I shoot portrait photography, so while I can find many areas that overlap in several fields (wedding, fashion, stock, comercial photography) I'd like most of the info to apply and be helpful. I know I can't expect everything to be helpful or to apply to my specific business, but I'd like the info to useful for the most part, you know what I mean?

I know I have a lot to learn in both the technichal and business end of photography, as well as photoshop.

so.............. any suggestions? read2.gif thumbsup.gif

Thanks everyone!!!!

Hi Jen, the only one I actually subscribe to is Rangefinder. I will buy shutterbug, or pop photo, or DigitalPhotoPro, or any of the other monthly or bi-monthly mags on an issue basis at the bookstore if it has something in it I actually want to have. The next one I get will be the Professional Photographer from PPA, but I thoroughly recommend Rangefinder!

A friend of mine just gave me a subscription to PCPhoto and American Photo. I was buying the PC Photo cuz of the PS tutorials they provide in every issue.

I love PDN:

Best investment in terms of a photo mag.

PDN is the only mag geared at professional photographers - WPPI and PPA have promotional magazines (Rangefinder & Professional Photographer), and then there are the arty journals. So if you're willing to pay for a Lenswork or Aperature subscription they're REALLY good, and they'll get you thinking outside the box.

Thank you so much everyone! I will have to go to my nearest Barns & Nobel or Borders and check some of these mags out. I really appreciate the advice thumbsup.gif

LensWork is gorgeous. I've been taking it since 2001. The printing, since about 2003 or so, is second to none. Learn by seeing beautiful work issue after issue and hearing why instead of how rather than reading regurgitated technical stuff.

+1, it teaches you the philosphy behind the work.

I also subscribe to PDN, rangefinder is free, and will read b&w when I stop in at the book store.

Great thread. I was just researching this exact thing the other day. I, too, will look up these suggestions.

I second or third or whatever PDN and Lenswork. I think I third PDN and second Lenswork. I need to recount the previous replies. smile.gif

Here in Canada I am able to get Digital Photographer & Digital Camera World. These are both imports from the UK and are just about the best magazines I have read. They are loaded with great camera reviews, software comparisons and also tons of Photoshop tutorials. They both come with CD's chalked full of video & PDF tutorials and examples.

I highly recommend them but they can get expensive...quick!

Cheers!

I'm a Rangefinder subscriber too. It's FREE and you can't beat that. Here's a link to the free subscription page:

I'll pick up PDN now and then. That's a great magazine. I also enjoy Professional Photographer from the UK as well as Digital Camera.

Is it me, or does the UK seem to turn out better looking magazines than the US? It just seems they have a lot more photos, tutorials, cd and more to offer in general.

Rangefinder, popphoto, shutterbug.
Also enjoy the napp magazines, like layer and I cant remember the other one that comes with the napp membership.
