Of course I know I'll have to keep my cell phone, but will the iPod touch do all the other stuff that the iPhone would have?
Verizon is the only game in town and I just don't love the Dare. It's cool, but the apps are what makes the iPhone great. Plus, I hear shootQ will be doing an app for the iPhone. I'd love to make use of that once I get it all up and running.
Thoughts??
Thanks.

It's my understanding that the ipod Touch can do anything the iPhone can do except make calls. You can get on the internet but you have to be connected to a wi-fi network instead of the AT&T 3G network. So it's a little more limiting as far as convenience is concerned but I know a couple people who have them and absolutely love them.
Apps definitely work with the Touch.

My husband as an iPod Touch and the wi-fi thing is iffy at best. I wish it could connect through some sort of data plan with the 3G system. Or maybe I'm missing something and it can?

thanks guys....I'm thinking that we will get a wifi connection at the house and I will use it when I'm at home....use the one at work when I'm there. Outside of that, I guess I would usually be able to get to a wifi. I'm looking forward to others weighing in with their experiences. Especially regarding Jules' question.

Ginger...I have the same problem for now. I have a Touch and recently took it with me to Japan. I was able to email and even look in on OSP. However...a few times we ventured away from major cities and was not able to find a signal....but a guy traveling with me was able to use his iphone all around the country. I love the apps...and I used the currency converter constantly.

It's possible to use the Touch as a phone, but it's a pain. Do some Googling around and you will see. If we ever get, one, I'll do some hacking, but not with high hopes.

I have owned both generations of the iPod Touch and love it. The 2nd generation has a speaker which is nice for the apps that have sound. The things you cannot do with the Touch that you can do with the iPhone are:
-Make Calls over network (you can make VOIP calls over wifi with the right gear)
-Take Photos (no camera)
-Connect to the internet outside of WIFI (sometimes it is inconvenient when you need it. But a lot of restaurants, hotels, laundry mats, grocery stores, airports, schools, and businesses have free wifi for you to use)
*There are more, but this is the main one's
I love mine and bought it for the same reason as you, I am a Verizon customer and wouldn't dare switch to AT&T again, here in Dayton, Ohio...it sucks at best.
Hope that answers some questions and if you have any specific one's just ask.

My husband's Touch doesn't work at his office because of a firewall and it doesn't work on the train. Two places he'd like to be able to use that wifi thing the most.

Have him try this:
On the iPod, go to Settings > Wifi >
Click on the Arrow next to the Network he wants to connect to > Make sure the DNS and Router #'s are the same, if not, have him type them into the box to sync them
This should fix his issue with the firewalls

I'm a Verizon user too and am anxiously awaiting the Blackberry Storm's official release to check it out. The Dare doesn't impress me either but I think the Storm might. I have a Blackberry now and LOVE it. I have been wondering the same thing about the iPod Touch so I'm keeping tabs on this post!

LOL very bold statement there.... although completely completely inaccurate. They're completely different devices - each has their own advantages over their other. I'd be interested to see the G1 do multi-touch...... oh it can't? Amazing....

I had a sneaky feeling you'd pop in.
You are right, they are different. I say gPhone is better because I own one. You say iPhone is better because you own one. Just difference of opinion. You got me on the multi-touch, but that changes next year with new devices running Android...which is why I think the G1 is better than the iPhone....OPEN-NESS!
G1 has multi-tasking. Browse the net, while the page loads log into imeem and stream some music, return to the browser and read the loaded page, get an email, check it, return to imeem....all very fluid. It also has a browser cache, which is cool because that means that the browser doesnt choke like Safari on iphone after browsing for a long period of time. Just some benefits over the iphone, but at the same time the iphone can do somethings that the G1 cant....like multi-touch....but is that it?
Maybe we should start a gPhone vs iPhone thread. My gPhone agains the iPhone's of OSP. Just for fun.

to the OP: get the BlackBerry Storm. thus far, it's the only legitimate competition to the iPhone, and unlike the iPhone, it can run on CDMA and GSM networks (very useful if you travel a lot, particularly abroad).

i read that, too. after playing with the Storm today, my verdict is ... i dunno.

i hate that the Storm doesn't have wifi. but that's Verizon's fault, not RIM/Blackberry's. Verizon is completely draconian about everything.
the jesusPhone isn't without its faults, but it is impressive. the screen on the Storm is slightly higher resolution than the iPhones, although i don't know how noticeable that is.
i'd wait till an OS update comes out for the Storm, then get it. that's what i'll probably end up doing. i like the jesusPhone, but ATT's service flat out isn't as good as Verizon's. i hate admitting that, because i LOATHE verizon with every fiber of my being

I'm locked into verizon for another year and didn't feel like buying out my contract and having to upgrade to a more expensive plan than I have now, so I got a touch.
I love it.
I have tons of apps and use them all frequently and cannot imagine life w/o this device now.
I don't live in a major downtown area and I get wifi everywhere. I have wifi both at home and work, and I pick up unsecured spots all the time. A surprising amount of restaurants have free wifi, even the most unlikely of places, like tiny mom-and-pop places. If you have a registered Starbucks card, you can hop on their AT&T access point for free.
Some of the most useful apps I have don't require a live wifi connection to work, or allow you to download specific information and store it locally to your device.
Yes, occasionally it's a drag when I can't get online, but there are plenty of other non-internet distractions to play with until I get back online. If I want to post to twitter or something I'll use my cell phone.
The only things that I wish it had are a camera and a mic, so Shazzam and some other apps would work. I could care less about having the phone functionality, though I admit that I would LOVE the visual voicemail thing, because I detest voicemail and have to be forced to even check my messages.
I love that I can get my email nearly 24/7 now and respond easily. We have a studio phone line that emails us our voicemails as wav files, and I can listen them more easily and quickly through the ipod interface than I can on my desktop. It's awesome.

So good to hear someone mention the Gphone and say its good. My area doesn't have 3G yet but should within the next month or so. I wanted to go with AT&T for the Iphone but long story short someone opened a att account in our name and let it go bad, so they want a 1k deposit from us....not happening. So we went with Tmobile. Also the month fee for the Gphone is cheaper than the Iphone. I think?.?

I have the Ipod touch and love it. I showed a friend and one-time client her wedding slide show created from Pro-show Gold and she watched the whole thing with a friend...who then looked-over my other photos on the device and was so impressed that she asked for business cards. two days later I got an inquiry from her co-worker and we are meeting next week to discuss her wedding.
Gotta love that!

Yeah when it breaks down the gphone is cheaper than the iphone. After nearly 6 weeks of having my g1, it has not locked up, lagged, glitched, or anything. Everything runs so smoothly, even when your surfing the net, streaming music, and replying to emails on the go. Heck, I'm replying to this thread on my gphone. Next year an update comes that will allow flash in the g1s browser (which is actually chrome lite). Totally impressed all the way...

Can the iPod Touch be used as a PDA/organizer?
of course it can! with the wifi connectivity, you can browse the web, check your email accounts, download attachments, and manage your calendars and contacts just like you can with an iPhone. The iPod touch also supports push just like the iPhone, so any contact/calendar changes you make when you're connected to the internet are immediately pushed over tha air to the MobileMe server (if you have mobile me) or microsoft exchange and in turn, they are pushed from there up to your computers etc, keeping everything effortlessly organized.
You can also obviously download songs, applications etc from the app store and itunes directly from the handset, as well as sync your music and movies from your computer. For more information, you can go here:
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/features/ and click on the different features on the left sidebar to find out more

I do have to say though - the iPod touch will just leave you wanting an iPhone!

No, it does not. However, it can find and estimate current location information based on triangulation from wifi hotspots. Since GPS functionality also requires a non-stop connection to download maps information (which is done via the cell network on the iPhone - or wifi if you're stationary) the iPod touch cannot do the same thing.
Basically all it means is you just can't use it on the move. If you want to get directions from a location with wifi, that works great!
