Full Version: Where did my images go?

I recently switched my wordpress blog to another domain, and had some trouble so I contacted Prophoto to help me reinstall it.

This morning I went to link to a wedding post and noticed the images were gone. Looking through my blog it looks like there's many posts that don't have images.

I looked in the media library and it says I have 245 images, but after the first few pages (that show the image) it just gives me a file number and no image.

Does anyone have any idea what could've happened and how I would go about fixing it, short of re-uploading TONS of images? I'm so frustrated I feel like pulling my hair out right now!

i ws about to post about the same problem. not all my photos are missing, but i notice a lot of the time when i cehck my blog, that there are a lot of missing photos - i just get question marks instead of photos.

i have gone to a few other of those pro photo blogs and notice the same things.

I just went to both of your blogs and went back several pages and didn't see any missing photos? Is it when you go directly to the individual post that they aren't there, or an "older posts" page (you know, with 10 posts or something on it, which is a lot of pictures and did take a while to load). I also looked in the archives and still saw pictures. Are you seeing it on particular posts or just in general?

One thing about the ProPhoto template is because the images are sooo big, we really need to make sure the file size is small (I think Jared's advice was aim for 100k?), and one thing I did in the WP settings was to reduce the number of posts that show on one page. I'm wondering if it's just a lot of data and the pictures aren't all loading maybe?

I don't know if it's new in the new ProPhoto template or if it's just more clearly labeled, but Jared's put in a new feature called Lazy Loader or something which waits to load the pictures farther down the page until your visitor has gotten there. I think it's supposed to speed up load times.

why was i never made aware of the 'lazy loader' ????? wierd. how did you find out about it robin?

Sorry, Tami, I wasn't clear. It's officially in the new P2 template. I don't know if it's in the old one and Jared just didn't say anything about it (you can turn it off in the new one if it's giving you problems). When I went to your blog, I felt like your blog was behaving as though it had it, meaning that when I scrolled down, at first I didn't see the pictures, just their placeholders, but they did load. Jared's official description for the Lazyloader is "Makes your blog load much quicker by only loading images the user can see or will see soon as they scroll down your page."

I didn't see any question marks on your blog, though, so I am not sure that I'm seeing the problem that you're seeing.

I notice you use IXWebhosting. They are not very good in terms of uptime and speed and I've heard of them 'losing' files before too.

I see that the images for your post here seem to be missing:

I've been with IX for 2 years and haven't really had any problems. I don't know if the issue is with them if Tami is having trouble too.

Even though you can post large images on the Prophoto theme, I still resize them to 650 pixels on the long side. I don't think that has anything to do with it, though. My newer posts (the ones posted since the reinstall) are showing images.

I can't see any images from the weddings posted in August.

I don't know either but I did try viewing one of your missing images and it's showing a ShowIt Sites error:

Tami, I looked at your blog and didn't notice any obvious missing images.

So could the images have gotten lost in the blogger to WP transition then?

In the past I have found my uploaded images my FTP program but WP does kind of squirrel them away.

I was just throwing out the image size as a possible issue... I have gone to some ProPhoto blogs with millions of pictures on the opening page... combine that with a big file size and 10 posts and the page takes about a year to load. But it doesn't sound like that is your problem.
Lisa W
As best I can tell, the images and posts that were from blogger have all been imported. There was a period of 3 or 4 months when I used the blog as a blog-site, then decided to go to showit. It looks like the posts from that period are the ones that are missing.

Maybe I'll try to upload a couple of the files again and see if that works. I'm not sure if I should contact Jared or Showit support. Jared has really gone out of his way to help me get this back up and running, and I've had nothing but trouble since it went back up. I thought I could finally leave him alone.

ok, time for me to look really stupid. when this first started happening, i was also receiving messages that my server space was at critical - i panicked and deleted all of my blog posts! i know. it was stupid and i realized later it was the fact i had 4 sites full of images i was no longer using, stored on my server.

in just the past few days have gone to several blogs which i know are pro photo blogs, who are missing images as i scroll down. just this morning i scrolled down on my blog and noticed about 10 images missing from the last wedding i posted.

i dont know what it is, it could be internet issues maybe? i know i have been having trouble lately.
Lisa W
Lol! I actually deleted my blog from when my business name was Impressions. About a year's worth of posts. Afterwards I was like "why did I do that???"

Tami, can you give me a few links to the other blogs you're talking about? I'd like to take a look.

Although Jared rocks and seems like he can answer just about anything, I think it's a Showit issue, Lisa.... esp. with the error message coming from Showit. That's where I'd try checking first.
Lisa W
Yeah, I just emailed them both. Hopefully one of them will get it fixed soon! Looks like I'm missing pictures from July-most of October. That only covers my entire wedding season this year, lol!

lisa -

i can see all the images on blog posts after oct 14 but not before - is that when you switched the blog over?
Lisa W
It's the period from July-part of October. The part that I was just using the blog.

Jared emailed me and said it's a problem with the paths pointing to the old domain. He has a script that will fix it I guess. Thank God for Jared!

Jared Henderson
so, as Lisa indicated, it was a problem created when she moved her blog to a new domain.

this is not intuitive to people, but WordPress actually writes the HTML path to your pictures into the database. So even if you move your files and database successfully when migrating to a new domain, the HTML stored in the database will be wrong, thus the "missing images".

there are two ways to fix it:

1) you can do a find/replace on your database export at the time you are moving your blog (this is the best option).

2) you can set up a simple plugin to filter for the wrong path and replace it with the new one. this is what i did for Lisa, and her images are working again.

if anyone has moved a blog and would like a copy of the plugin i wrote to fix paths, PM me.

FYI: the "LazyLoader" feature is only in the new ProPhoto2 beta theme, no one with the old theme has it.
littler chicken
Sorry about that Jared. You are amazing and it seems like every time I turn around you are going above and beyond the call of duty.

Now that you have explained it, I actually remember that I had the same issue when I went from a site+blog to a blog site (or whatever you want to call it). My host fixed my database for me, I think doing option 1. It took them about 3 minutes.
AZJamie
So when can we get the new ProPhoto2 theme???

Hopefully soon, Jamie! At this point the delay is not so much on Jared's end (WP is coming out with a major release). Trust me, it is completely worth the wait. Jared has pulled out all the stops on this one and the amount of customization you can do (on your own and pretty easily!) is mind-blowing.
Lisa W
I refered Jared to this thread because Tami had mentioned other blogs with missing images, so I wasn't sure if there was a bigger problem.

He fixed everything for me this morning, and I have promised never to move my domain again, lol!

Jared, thank you for continuing your awesome support, even months after purchase. It really means a lot because I was pulling my hair out thinking I had to re-upload all of those images!

are you going to help me robin????? cause i can't do anything on my own and i desperately want to change my wallpaper and logo.... paaaaaaaaleeeeeeze???? wub.gif

Tami, I would be thrilled to help you if I can! What do you need?

Playing with the blog has been a ton of fun. I love knowing that I can change these things all by mineself without needing a manual. I learned a TON of CSS things with the original ProPhoto but the new one, you don't even have to know what you're changing. The new back end interface is amazing.

PM me Tami if you want to play!
