Full Version: Backing up and storing photos

One thing I've been really confused about as a new photographer is backing up and storing. I'd love to hear your insight and tips on how to do it. I know there is not only ONE right way, which only adds to my confusion, but hopefully seeing all of your tips will help me decide what will work best for me.
Right now all I do is import my photos onto one hard drive, and use Lightroom to back them up to a separate drive. I know this is not the right or best way to do it!
I've just joined OSP and am loving it! Everyone is so helpful and willing to share. Thank you for all of your help!

I strongly recommend having a nightly mirror image of each of your working hard drives (both internal and external if applicable). That way if one dies you don't have to do any painful recovery, just plug the duplicate in and go.

That and a complete set of DVDs located offsite and you're golden. I burn the Lightroom exported Jpgs from each job to DVD and store them offsite. I used to delete the RAW files when I archived the job (moved it from a production drive to an archive drive, also an identical two drive set) but now I don't bother to delete them, hard drive space is cheap. I know 'hard drives are cheap' sounds weird or even condescending when you're starting out, but really, you can store files on two drives for around $0.20 a GB now, that's pretty cheap.

Other's may have other ideas but that's my simple plan. ;-)

Hey Emilee:

I tried my best to document our process here. You might find it helpful!

If you do a little searching you'll find a couple posts about this topic. But I recommend having DVD backups, an external hard drive and even online backup system (in case of theft or fire).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, everyone! I'm definitely going to search for previous topics, I didn't even think of that! And Charles, thanks for the link, it's a great, helpful post!

Everything is in the archives... except stuff that hasn't been invented yet. smile.gif

Consider these terms for your search: backup, back up, off-site, offsite, off site, RAID, Drobo, Time Machine, Retrospect, workflow, recovery

That should keep you busy for about three weeks.
