Full Version: Height Disparity - Engagement Portrait

A wonderful fun loving couple I photographed yesterday evening on the University of Western Ontario grounds where they had gone to school. All I was told by them when booking the date and location, was to look for a 6'1" blonde and they'd look for the guy with the camera. I have to say upon meeting, that the situation I would be faced with wasn't what I expected. I would be dealing with a much older couple than I presumed and this was probably the greatest height disparity I have had to deal with where the woman was taller than the man.

I explained to them that while I would use my arsenal of skills to bring them close together for pleasing portraits, I wasn't going to hide the fact that he was much smaller than her by making it appear that he was as tall or taller than her - - - instead I just would use camera angles, seating (the great equalizer), natural terrain and tilting of bodies to bring them into a comfortable position that would be compositionally pleasing, show their love and closeness, and keep a perspective and size relationship that would probably be how they see themselves when together. I just wanted them to feel and look natural. I loved the challenge - and they had a great time.

She had chosen an area where there were doors and windows - she said there was something about them she liked. I used this doorway and posed them in a younger style.

This is an outtake that shows them as I saw them when we first met:

VIDEO CLIP OF SHOOT

I was fortunate to have my 3D animator buddy with me to help with fill lighting duties - and to my surprise he brought along his little Canon camera to record a bit of the process with a few clips of Video. I'm so glad he did as it is fun to watch the process, methods and explanations that I used to deal with the couple and to disarm them so that the shoot wouldn't be intimidating. I personally think it is great seeing and hearing the way they respond to me also. Hopefully others might enjoy this too and so I have uploaded it to GOOGLE VIDEO for that purpose.

* what my expectations and plans were
* adjusting to the ideas of the client
* explaining the process used
* dealing with the sometimes sensitive matter of height

I am going to make the couple up a DVD with this video segment on it to be included with the final print order. I think they will enjoy having it too - at least I hope so!
