Full Version: Death to the monitor.
OpenSourcePhoto > YA wanna FIGHT! > Mac vs. Windows

I haven't ever had this happen to me, but I think my monitor is dying! I have a Dell 17" monitor that is about 5 years old and it seems like it is getting a little blurry in one big area- the blurriness is light- but it's definitely blurry. I also am hearing a little buzz coming from the montior. Anyone else experience this?

Now---

What new monitor would YOU buy?! (I'm staying PC folks- can't cough up the cash to go Mac!)

You will want a S-IPS/PVA monitor since they don't change colors as you move your head... even with a PC you can get an Apple Cinema display, they are really nice for the price... what size are you looking at?

HP has a model that is also S-IPS, and I believe Dell 2408WFP is still S-IPS...

But again, what size and what budget?

Hey Scott- how's it going?

I am pretty unfamiliar with knowing what size to buy- so any advice is welcome! As far as budget- I have none! That doesn't mean it is endless, it means that I didn't budget for it to go out on me and I need to be smart about what I buy. I need something good quality, but I don't need the end all be all of monitors, you know what I mean? Anything I spend I am taking away from my new laptop fund! BUT- I MUST get the monitor soon- I can't be editing images on a blurry and bad monitor, you know?!

Hey Scott- how's it going?

It is going well, thanks for asking smile.gif

Well, I like larger monitors, but they cost more...
I think in order of size/quality:
20" Apple Cinema (refurb, but still fine): $499 (LINK)
20" HP LP2065: $390 (LINK)
24" Dell 2408WFP (refurb): $450 (LINK)

I have an older Dell now and I love it... no viewing angle issues, my prints match, everything is fine... but Dell has been known for starting to sell a monitor as the higher-grade S-IPS panels, and then switching them to the lower-grade TN panels (viewing angles change the colors...)
So if you get a good one, great!

Are their better monitors? Oh yeah... but they come at a price!

I checked them all out superficially. Will look more into them in the am. Need to sit on this.

I can't get the link for the Dell to to work- but looked it up through their site. Got the same error code when I tried to check out the price. That one is looking good though...

considering what you're going to pay for a monitor, it's funny that you say you don't have the money to "go mac" when it would only cost around $1400-1500 to get a pimped out iMac! What's the real reason you're afraid of the switch? wink.gif

No offense intended, I think it's just interesting how people make excuses not to switch when they really know deep down that it would benefit them greatly in the long run.

Good luck in your search....

Hey Trevor- I was wondering if I would hear from you about the good ole mac! wink.gif You know- I CAN afford a mac, but it's the software that seems to be kicking me in the tail! Perhaps I need to chew on the whole thing a while longer and pull together a cost analysis between getting the new montior and a Dell PC and then the mac set-up with the software. I looked into it a while back and it just didn't seem cost effective. I also am struggeling with why the mac would be better for my workflow. I'm just not 100% sold that it would be best for me.

Hey Beth, if you get a chance, hop on your Yahoo messenger or skype and I'll be happy to chat with you for a bit. I have a feeling that your software needs may not be as cost ineffective as you may think, but I could be wrong.
