Full Version: Using a captcha on a Wordpress blog

Hey guys,

In the past week I've gotten over 900 spam comments on my Wordpress blog. Moderating it has become a full time job! I know a lot of people are using captcha's (the images that generate a code for people to type in in order to post) I *hate* to go that route but I cannot spend all this time just moderating blog posts.

Is it a plugin or a setting? I haven't messed with wordpress all that much (no time) so I could really use some help with this, thanks!

Not to circumvent the actual question but...well, that's exactly what I'm going to do. smile.gif

For starters, are you using Akismet? It's a spam plug-in that comes installed with Wordpress but you may need to activate it on the plugins page. You might also consider adding the Bad Behavior plugin. You can also set your comment preferences so that a commenter must have had a previous comment approved before their comments automatically appear.

With the combination of the three of those, all of my spam is neatly contained into their proper junk bins where I can deal with them if I feel like or leave them to self-delete. If you haven't tried that route, you might consider it before going to captcha which is just so so irritating to deal with as a commenter.

And just so that I'm not totally worthless, if you search for captcha on the wordpress plugin site, there are quite a few to choose from.

There is also a "Comment Blacklist" in your Discussion panel that you can add specific keywords that might get through. I have Akismet and anything that gets through it I just blacklist the words that they include in their post. I might get one a month.

The good thing about Askimet is if you mark something as SPAM that got thru it adds to its global database for next time (AFAIK)

+1. I've had ZERO spam since I activated it.
