This is kind of funny...
We had some stormy clouds for a couple days. I kept looking at the clouds saying "Ohhhh.... I wish I had time to play with an off camera flash!" But, I have been insanely busy, so I haven't had time to play. Well, I knew I had this senior at the beach, and I knew he was bringing his jeep. So, I thought... "time to play!" I was on the phone with my photographer friend on the way to the beach, and I said to her, "I am going to get a competition print tonight at my session." She said "How do you know?" I said "Clouds, beach, jeep, and off camera flash. That is how I know!" So, she said to call her on the way home..... I called her and said, "Yup, I got it!"
Needless to say, I couldn't wait to load these on the computer and see.....

GREAT JOB!!!! The lighting is AMAZING! Nice work!!
The only teeny tiny CC I'd add is that his pose seems a bit feminine. Having him stop supporting himself on his hand on the sand and putting both of this elbows/arms up on his knees, leaning a bit forward, would make him look much more manly & imposing. But that's really minor! I think the shot is great!

I agree with Carey... even having him standing up, in front of the truck, "towering" over the camera, would be cool... or standing facing camera right, looking off, arms crossed... but you did nail the lighting!!

Kathy, it is in Muskegon at Pier Marquette.
So, you really think his pose looks feminine? He was very into fashion, but not feminine at all. I keep looking at it, and I don't think it looks feminine at all..... Hmmm..... I do have one of him standing too, but I don't think it looks as good as this one.

Muskegon? I haven't shot there. I guess all the beaches here look pretty similiar. I love the shot. I don't think it's super fem, just a bit...not enough to bother me though.

He shined that jeep up all nice for the pictures!!!!! I think he would die with some mud on there! In fact, he was disappointed that he didn't do the rims!

I wonder what the composition would look like with a different focal length. With a longer lens, the lighthouse would appear larger. Did you try anything like that? I love the lighthouse, and would like to see it play a more dominant role in the composition.
Just a thought.

No, I didn't try a long lens at all. I wanted the wide angle... that was what I had in mind when I shot this. I don't think a longer lens would give as much attention to the sky. It was getting dark fast, and we had to move quick. So, I didn't have a lot of time to play. This was only one set up of many for his senior session.

He has the classic feminine pose with the tilt of his head. If it were tilted the other way, it would have been more masculine.
I find it interesting that female photographers do this more than male photographers -- pose men in a "feminine" pose --and they don't see anything wrong with it. And if the boys are trying to impress girls, and the girls don't see the issue, is it really an issue? Hmmm.

The pose is slightly girlee, IMO. Even if it's not considered "feminine" or "girlee," there are certainly more "manly" ways to pose him by adjusting the tilt of his head, where his arms are, etc. If he wanted to look tough-guy, there would be better poses. If he likes a softer side, this is good.

Hey Matt, thanks!
I used my sb800, and my brolly umbrella. I had the falsh on full power, Manual. I had to move it in as close as I could get it without it being in the shot.
