I just bought a new iMac with 2GB RAM, and I'm wanting to purchase another 2GB online and install it myself.

What do I need to buy? If I buy this, will that be what I need?

I did this to my old laptop and I remember I had to buy the memory a certain way so it was compatible.

Check out www.crucial.com they have an easy way to find your exact model and what RAM chip set you need. I did it to my MBP.

Great- thanks so much!

Yeah, crucial is the way to go. I upgrade about 100 computers a year via crucial and they are fantastic to work with. And on the rare occasion that I end up with bad RAM, they have been very good about replacing it.

It greatly depends on which iMac you have. Their RAM is specific to when the computer was released, and I'm sure Crucial's system is great for finding out which kind you need.

However, I prefer to purchase all of my RAM from http://www.transintl.com

Their customer service is excellent (if you have any questions just call them and they'll take care of you quickly and politely!) and their prices rock.

I really wouldn't buy RAM for your Mac from newegg....

Also keep in mind that if you have a white iMac the RAM install is a bit more complicated than with the new aluminum iMacs. Either way, you can find documentation on apple's support site for the install based on which model of computer you have.

Good luck smile.gif

Really? It was easy-peasy to install RAM in a white iMac (December 2006). Now, installing RAM in a 7100 box -- that was difficult.

There is one iMac model where it's a pain.. I forget which. My fav has to be the Mac mini... you need a spackling blade to open it up. Apple actually tells you what size to buy and how much to sand the edge to make it sharp.

I guess it's the older ones... I think the one I did was a G5 and it was just more of a pain than I had expected. The new aluminum iMacs simply have one or two little bays at the bottom of the "screen" that you open by removing a screw then pulling a tab.

And yes, crucial is more expensive than Transintl.com... I've really loved working with Transintl and I've never had a bad experience with them. I think I'm going on 40 gigs or RAM purchased from them, or something crazy like that haha.
