I stumbled upon this site and thought many in this community might be interested. Operation Photo Rescue is a volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to restoring photographs that have been damaged due to natural disasters for free.

From the site:
QUOTE
Insurance can replace homes, furniture and automobiles in time of need. However, photographs, which are important pieces of a family's history, are unprotected. Operation Photo Rescue (OPR) is a volunteer network of professional photojournalists and amateur digital photographers, graphic designers, image restoration artists and others. OPR's mission is to repair photographs damaged by unforeseen circumstances such as house fires and natural disasters at no cost to the people who own them. Here are a few of the services we offer:

  • Free restoration of photos damaged by natural disaster
  • Community forum
  • Copy run services to disaster affected areas

Just thought I'd throw it out there for awareness for anyone interested. Seems like an amazing way to use our talents to help out those who have been affected.

Thanks Nate, I was about to post this as well. They have lost their federal funding due to the economic crisis, and they need donations. These guys did a great job during Katrina helping out people who had damaged photos from the flood waters.

We have teamed up with NAPP to help spread the word. We are also working on details to help them find photographers who can go to the flooded areas to set up stations which can digitize their pictures, log in the info, and send the files to OPR. Once we get those details together, I'll make a post.

Interesting. I signed up, I used to do restorations professionally. I am not sure how much time I can devote to this, but it would be nice to flex my photoshop muscles now that I'm using a lot more actions and presets. I sorta miss doing stuff the "old fashioned" way.

Just wanted to give this thread a bump so more people know about OPR. We should all do a blog post about this!
