Hi OSP!

Well, something funny is going on with my system. After I installed a new Firewire 800 card, my PC doesn't work. I removed the card and I'm still having the same problem.

It boots, loads and then automatically reboots over and over again. I went into the setup and chose "disable automatic reboot if system failure" option and all I get is the famous "Blue Screen of Death."

Before I have to wipe the system clean and start over, is there anything else I can do to fix this?

I've gone into "Safe" mode and ran my virus and spyware programs and found nothing. I even ran Norton WinDoctor in safe mode and found nothing wrong.

Any advise or help you can share is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

This will solve all your problems.

I take it that it's not rebooting itself when you go into Safe Mode?

How old is the computer?

I had that problem recently, I had a computer guy look at it and he said my usb ports were buggered and that was causing the shorting problem, you need a new motherboard. He managed to save all my pics and install them to the new board. Take it to a computer guy.

Hi Sam,
Doubtful you need a Mac
Doubtful you need a new motherboard (it boots fine in SAFE mode)

You don't mention which version of OS you run. Might be helpful information.

The new version of iTunes (8) has been causing this to happen on Vista machines although you only mention the firewire board as the only modification to your system.
I would look online for the latest drivers for that board and ensure they are compatible with your OS version (and 64 bit or 32).
You should also boot into SAFE mode and remove the drivers you installed with the board or that you allowed the system to install at the time of that first boot. Try add and remove software or a/r hardware.

At the least, and most troublesome you should be OK after an OS re-install (arrggghhh).

Hope you get there.

LOL - you psych'd me out there Jim. Yes, that would be nice. It's coming, just not right now. And BTW - I didn't know a rifle could look so good. ;-)

Hi Kaitlin,

When I go into "safe" mode I'm OK. I brought it in 2005.

Thanks Bill, it looks like I'm going to have to do a OS re-install. Having done this twice since I've had it ARRGGGHHH is right! I haven't been able to locate my system discs so I may have to reorder them. This is getting to be a pain. Lessons learned:

1. Store everything somewhere safe just in case you have to wipe the system clean.

2. Get a Mac.

:-)

Thanks MJ. Let's hope I don't need a new motherboard...

Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it. I'm working on my laptop and the computers at my complex's club house. I have a wedding to finish editing and then I can focus on fixing my PC. Since I'm not online as much as before thanks for your patience as it will take me a day or two to respond. :-)

PS

I'm running XP with the service packs.

Had that happen to me before, take it into the geek squad see if they can save you. If not I had to reboot too. It sucks, those are the symptoms of a virus I think.

Did you try going into your BIOS setting and trying to boot from cd/dvd?
