Hi!

I am looking for image downloader for Mac which has similar features with Downloader Pro for Windows (http://www.breezesys.com/Downloader/index.htm).
I need the following:
- be able to pick photos from multiple directories and sort them by shooting time/date
- rename them and sequentially renumber
- copy to multiple locations (optional)
- rotate and change the resolution in JPEG files
- apply IPTC info

I like Downloader Pro, but I need very similar or better software for Mac OS X.

Please recommend.
Thank you.

Iview Media Pro is probably the best. You could try Photo Mechanic, too. I've never used that one. Media Pro is now called Expression Media by Microsoft. I'm still using an old version that's iView-branded.

Thank you, I don't need the entire image management program, but just a little one to download and rename images.
MeeksDigital
I'm not sure of the full capabilities of Image Capture, but it's built right into OS X

Otherwise I'd recommend Lightroom... you should really look into it.

So, nobody uses any image downloaders/renamers for Mac. How do you get your pictures renamed and organizer after the shoot?
I need it to be able to handle images from multiple cameras and photographers.
Anybody?

Personally I was using LR to do that, import, rename, sort by time stamp, and apply my default settings of contrast boost and such. But LR is slow and it can't handle multiple cards. I go the Lexar Firewire UDMA readers and I am stacking them, so now, all I do is open each card, select all, and drag to my specified folder, then repeat for the next card, then the next, etc. In about 15 mins I download about 10-12Gb of images, and then I simply import into LR from the folder on the disk and do the same, import, rename, sort, and apply default settings. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hey dude, how have you been? I've used DIM http://www.alanlight.com/dim/Dim.htm in the past and it works good. I now just use LR.
Alex H
Here is how Downloader Pro works and why I like it.
I download images into desktop temp folder. Each card goes into separate subfolder. If I had multiple shooters/cameras I might have files with the same name.
Downloader sucks all images from all subfolders and sorts them by time and applies renaming pattern. Then I tell it to download and it will copy those image (renaming and rotating jpgs if needed) into destination folder. Plus it is very secure and won't let you delete image if it wasn't downloaded or time stamp is different from what is on destination vs source location.

Lightroom is the PERFECT solution for that. Not only can you import and organize your images (as well as full-on raw developing/exporting) but you can sort your images by camera type, camera serial number, photographer etc.... there are too many options to list.

http://www.adobelightroom.com get the free 30-Day fully functional trial today and you won't look back.

Really? How can I move images from multiple folders into new destination (one folder) and have them renamed using LR?

Photo Mechanic. http://camerabits.com

Go now, you'll never look back.

I second DIM. I used it for the longest time. There are some good options. I do use LR now though.

Huh! Tested PM. It doesn't sort files chronologically before ingesting. Simple test: created folder 2 with files shot first and folder 1 with files shot later. It will pick files from folder 1 first even if then were shot later. If you shoot with multiple cameras - you have a problem.
So far only DIM and Downloader Pro can do that.
Mike Brice
Just download, sort by time, rename.

I wish I could do that. I can't dump all files from multiple cards (cameras) in one folder. What if you had a second shooter and image names from different cameras overlap?
Ross
photomechanic is great for this, and for resizing and renaming. otherwise if your on a mac you can use automator to transfer images and batch rename them - it works for files and images

not sure what exactly you mean by this....
Mike Brice
I understand what you are saying.

So what I do is this:

Rename upon upload to something generic:

080911WED[seqn]

Since I edit (delete) and rename prior to the final folder for the client it doesn't matter that the filenames are not in order.

However if it does, once I have all the images in the folder, sort by capture time, and rename to something more permanent.

Hope this helps.

Mike

My vote is for PM, but understand you have very specific needs. As far as image numbering issues. On Nikon's you can change the letters the file naming begins with and I think it makes sense to make it your initials or I know some sports shooters number their cameras with the prefixes. My files are named DFS_xxx, so if someone helps me out and their files are named WMP_xxx, then it's not possible to ever have a file overlap issue. I'm not sure if you can do this with the newer Canons as the last Canon I owned was the 5D. Best of luck with your search.
