Ok, nobody throw anything, but I can't seem to understand what the big deal is about the 5D that everyone likes?
I have the 20D and the Mark II N and those two seem to do just about everything I need.
Ok, I get the full frame thing, which is cool I suppose, but the Mark II is pretty wide too....
When I upgraded from the 10D I was just so glad not to have something that wasn't 3 fps and I can't imagine going back to a camera that's that slow.
I LOVE 8.2mp. I couldn't imgaine having to deal with all these files that were close to 13. I've never had clients wanting images that required more than 8mp so I'm trying to figure out what it is exactly about the 5D that everybody is so crazy about....

ISO 3200 and 24mm f1.4L. As a package the camera body blows (as does the 20D), but the low light and wide angle images are amazing compared to anything but a 1Ds Mk2... (I'm coming from a D2X when I say it blows).

I don't think it's a big deal...it's just a very good tool to work with. We own and use all bodies mentioned. As already stated, if you're into "wide" you'll appreciate the FF for sure. The resolution is good for me because I do quite a bit of post cropping at times. It's easy to get a good 8x10 vert from horiz, etc plus room to spare. I can't really quantify it, but the file from the 5D always wins in a the blind taste test with the 20D.
But, I must add I'm looking forward to adding a second 1D to the mix when funds allow. When I need to track movement, I usually pick up the 1D. When I put the 300mm on to shoot from the back of the dark Church, I use the 5D. In several cases I've gotten a really close actual ring shot by cropping the 5D file (which is the best for noise).
I guess just use whatever works for you

it has that "it" factor.. imo it is the combination of FF sensor resulting (for me at least) in a shallower DOF and on top of that the color and WB seem to just rock..
but honestly i think it is more #1 that makes the images seem so dreamy
ive shot about every canon body (except 1ds) and every nikon body, IMO the 5d has that "IT" factor i havent seen in ANY other camers (close might be the fuji s2)

chris im with you in terms of the 1D being the ultimate wedding camera. it is without a doubt the best camera in the market for weddings in my mind.
however
with that said the 5D has a great little niche to me. because it has such a large sensor and increased MP, the noise is almost non-exsistent. i had someone shoot a 5D at one of my receptions at 1600 and 3200 available light and there still was totally managable noise. THAT is impressive. plus i actually prefer the low light focusing capabilities of the 5D... although i may be one of the few on that one.
so to summarize.....
the 1D is my choice for almost everything i shoot. however once the reception starts i believe the 5D is a great choice and has advantages over the 1D (my 1D is making faces at me right now i know it!).
just my 2 cents chris.

I think the advantages of the file quality of the 5D hopefully will soon be enjoyed by an updated 1D series camera.....the few times i've shot with those (lukes, tim's, mark k's) i've been blown away - and although I like processing files from a 5D I still haven't quite gotten used to shooting with one but to be fair it was only for a few mins.
I think chris at the moment u have the ultimate wedding camera combo - 20D (not 30D) + MKIIN

Hey Katie! I shot an entire event the other day with a 30D and the images straight out of camera were different than im used to with the 20D. Not good, not bad but just different. I couldn't get the same out of camera results on the 30D as I could on the 20D - I think Matt/Sarah Antonino were having this same problem and Sarah actually owns one so u can get a more indepth analysis from them - but just know that its different. Maybe if I shoot with it more i'll get used to it...
I have to upgrade cameras soon and I really want a 1 series, nothing compares!!

Hehe, no stones this time

I am actually in the camp that believes Canon needs to step up their game on some of these camera bodies...I used to own a Nikon D200 and I REALLY liked how it was physically set up. BUT FF sensor and low noise beats that any day for me.

I'm another that has had "issues", for lack of a better term, with my 30D.
I can shoot a static scene with my 20D, switch the lens to my 30D, set the exact same settings on it, and the photo just "looks" different on the 30D.
Not "bad", but "different". Tough to define.
But, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the screen size on the 30D.

here is my thoughts for all you 1 series buffs
I think it releases crack through the grip, after you use it you just cant get enough
no really in all honestly, I have never seen a camera convert as many people (higher end pros) as the 5d. Canon has led Noink in sensors for a long time, but the 5D is what got all the people to really jump ship.

yea...dilema here!
I'm sure many people felt this way with the conversion from the 10D to the 20D and now I mean of course the 20D is a clear choice over the 20D. I fear we just haven't given the 30D enough of a chance. We can wait for the 40D I suppose lol?

Tim, dude, I'm on the fence now about a 5D, or else it's new version in 6 months, as opposed to a 40D. Just not sure what I want to do yet, haha.

I'm thinking about joining the 5D club. If they come out with a 6D there won't be any rebates. If they come out with a 40D it won't be full frame will it?
The D200 is definitely a sweet camera, right up to 400 ISO.
Canon definitely needs to figure out how to build better bodies.
Of course right after I buy a 5D Nikon will come out with a D3H that will make me switch back

For me simply it's the light. My daughters are involved in a lot of stage, piano recitals and the like where flash is not allowed. I know the 5D can't solve all the possible light issues but at least I'll be able to capture more than I have in the past. Also, I'd like to start a photog. business on the side and wanted a nice camera to start building a lens collection on.

We have a 20D (mine) and a 5D (my wifes) and I'm looking to upgrade to the 5D. After using hers on and off over the past year I am so impressed with the low light capabilities and low noice. Plus it seems like the images out of the camera from the 5D are much better and need much less post processing.
I have a 30D and will prob sell it this next year. it's my extreme backup. My issues have been with focusing as well as the fact that the images just dont look right out of the camera. Maybe Kevin K can come up with a 30D action to convert them to 'normal'...
BTW - Anyone know of any upcoming sales or promotions for 5D's? My 20 bit the dust...well, ok, I dropped it and now it's dust...so I need to replace or upgrade. i have an additional 20D I can use as backip for a while as I wait, but I am impatient and want to get my own 5D. I dont want to get one and see a sale or promo coming out so I can wait a little while...

Mark,
Canon is running up to a $600 rebate on the 5D until mid-January. Not sure if you knew that or not, but hope it helps! I'm leaning towards a 5D purchase to qualify for the rebate as well.

Chris.....
I think it is just a personal preference thing, really....
For me, NO other camera has provided what the 5D does! I have yet to find a camera that can give me an image like the 5D does!! I had Mark II's (and 10 & 20D's) and happily sold them when I fell for the 5D!! Plus, I'm a film girl and started with Blads & Mamiya's ages ago that provide unbelievable images and still, NO camera has effected me like the 5D.
I think it's a combo of:
full frame sensor(true wide angle!), image quality, color rendition, amazing noise handling capability, low light handling, size and weight(big for me!!).
I'm a 100 pound women, carrying two 5D's both with L lenses on them, vertical grip and all...so to have a camera that can product stunning images, while being small and lightweight enough to not hindering my ability to capture moments by being "too much of a camera"....well, that does it for me!

Yeah, I'm disappointed that I did not find out about the "issues" ppl were having with the 30D until I had already bought it. I researched it forever! Anyway, I feel like I'm having a little bit of soft focus issues with it.....other than that, I love it. But, let's be honest, soft focus is a MAJOR problem. Lately I've been doing some expiraments to figure out whether it is the camera or the camera-woman that is the problem.
Sorry, didn't mean to jack the thread. I wanted to chime in that I am also considering the 5d and have heard great things, too.

I like the 30D because of it's 2.5 screen. That alone made me want the 30D over the 20D. Once you go with a 2.5 screen you can't go back. I used a friends 20D and the only difference I could see was the screen. But the 30D with the 70-200IS the images blow you away. I'm sure the 5D and the 1D are better and the images are even more stunning. I think my next camera will be another 30D or if the money is there a 1D or 5D. I mean I don't know the differences in the images the 30D produces compared to the 20D. I guess if someone posted an example of the 2 with the same image then I would know. I really think it comes down to what you prefer and if the client is happy with the images. I know I can't go back to a smaller screen and the 30D was the same price as the 20D so I went with that. Maybe there are issues with this camera, I have yet to find any. If you are just starting out I think 2 30d's are the way to go. Figure out what you like or don't like and then upgrade from there. I think upgrading from any camera you are going to see a big difference in the pictures that the camera produces.

That is very easily fixed with some pocket wizards. Plus pc cord are just a royal pain and always get in the way.

Most of the time that is fine except when also using on-camera flash. Personally, I find that rubber cover is lame and I have already tweeked my PC socket after just 3 studio sessions. Just got PW's so it won't often be a problem anymore. The resulting images more than make up for the minor issues with the body though. Afterall, it is much better than my Mamiya ever was in so many ways!
I love my 5D but also can't wait to see what replaces the mkIIn. I do some model shoots that could find a high MP 1D series that is as fast as the MKII quite useful...

I think the rebate is for $300 is you buy one, $600 if you buy two. Or do you know of a different rebate? Because $600 off would be sweet

You get the $600 rebate if you but two qualifying items - Canon doubles the rebate. I was on B&H tonight. If you purchase the 5D, and then a 75-300 lens (under $200.00) you then double your rebate and end up with the camera and the lens for under 2300, and you can sell the lens if you dont want to use it - it looks like a lower end canon glass, but i cant tell. Anyone else used the 75-300?
