Full Version: North or South Facing Light better?

Is North or South Facing Light suppose to be the best? I thought it was North, but I was in my living room and my girls cooperated yesterday and let me take some photos. Here are a few of them. I really liked the lighting - and it was south facing. Any CC or plays are welcome. Also - would love to know which you like and dislike and why?

Settings (may have varied slightly - most were this) - 50mm 1.4 (a few used my 85 but it was too long on the 40d so I went to the 50 1.4.

ISO 640, Av 2.2, 1/125

6. Hmm - this one is looking a tad cool to me - I may have to warm this up a bit.

The next few were from a different day - and was North facing light - and going on memory I think was ISO 400, Av 1.4

Those are beautiful! I like #3, 7 and 9 the best.

I think the difference between north and south, is that north is generally even light through out the day, where as south changes more.

I don't think I can really comment on the light, they look good to me! Your daughters are gorgeous!!
Jodi Friedman
Thanks for commenting. So south is less consistent and changes more than north?

I like #1, 3 and the one sitting on couch forehead-to-forehead.

The lighting is perfect!

Your girls are gorgeous Jodi!!!!!!!!!!! And the shots and processing are great to!!

Beautiful shots! The first one made me smile because her hair reminded me of Pippi Longstocking (who I wanted to be when I grew up!) Thanks for that!

I love the shot of the 2 girls on the couch and they will LOVE it when the are grown I suspect!
Jodi Friedman
Thanks Shawn and Amy - yep - I think they will love these when they grow up.

They already love looking through albums of pictures. It is so cute!
Greta Reynolds
love them, and i thought of pippi too! i love the one where one of the girls is upside down.
Jodi Friedman
Thanks Greta - the upside down one I love - but I wish I had the 50mm on - that was right before I switched from the 85 to 50 - I did not have enough room to grab that extra foot.

Oh, my gosh. Your girls are adorable! I love the pixie haircut smile.gif I believe my favorites are 10 and 8. I love the pose of them on the couch with foreheads touching, but I wish I could see more of the girl's face whose hair has obscured it. If it weren't for that, that one would be a favorite too. Their crocheted tops are so cute! (did I spell that right?)
Jodi Friedman
Thanks so much - I totally agree on the one of them together - which I could see a hint more. I have one like that with both looking - but it is boring. I want them together but just a tad more of them revealed.

In the northern hemisphere... north light is the "prettiest" because it is non-directional.

Drop down below the equator, into the Land of Oz and South light becomes the prettiest. Same reason. It has to do with where the sun is relative to the window.

Eastern facing windows work on the same principle in the later part of the day... Western facing windows in the early part of the day.
Jodi Friedman
Troy - thank you so much for that explanation - that makes sense.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain.
