So as of last night, none of my programs on my month old HP laptop will open, except for the internet. when I try to open something, I just get spinning...spinning...

I can open my control panel, but when I click on something ( I tried to do system restore), it never opens either. When I try to restart or shut down, the computer gets stuck at "logging off". I tried taking the battery out and letting it cool down, still nothing.

I'm running vista. I'm going to call HP later if no one can help me figure this out...I just don't feel like spending lots of precious time on the phone b/c I have to work all day!

sounds kindof scary & I would just call HP right away.....I hope you don't have a LEMON....I would be mad if that happened on a one month old computer!

Try shutting it off...take out the battery and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Install the battery and turn it on. This worked on my wife's HP laptop a few months ago.

Try booting in safe mode.

Open in safe mode by repeatedly pressing F8 while the computer boots up. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.

Once in safe mode, try the system restore. Beyond that I’d call HP support.

I’ve been pretty impressed with HP’s support. You’ll get through pretty quickly if you call during the earlier hours rather evening.

Um, it's got windows on it... what do you expect?

Windows = LEMON

Like Jeff suggested you can hit F8 to get into the boot menu... one of the options should be "last known good configuration" if that doesn't work then try the safe mode to system restore.

Thanks everyone. I spent hours online with hp support (grr) and in the end had to completely restore it to its original condition. What a pain.

I'm sure Macs have their problems every once in a while too smile.gif

Do you start every sentence with "um," ? Just wondering.

Chill out man, I never did anything to you... why do you search for unnecessary conflict?

My point exactly. I've got a 7 year old mac that I rely on every single day to run and store my important files... not one problem whatsoever, and the only work I've done on it was minor upgrades like RAM and hard drives.

I'm sorry about this and its unfortunate that it did have to come to that. Hope you didn't lose too much stuff.

The nice things about macs though is that if the unthinkable happens and you have to restore, you can restore from a time machine backup to get back to an hour ago. Better than losing everything.

But like Meeks says, chances of the Mac OS going into a corrupted state are pretty slim, but it's nice to know its there.

Hard drive failure does happen, of course, but nothing any OS can do to prevent that...which is why even us mac guys need backups
