For those of you that offer a CD with images on it, what type of CD/DVD do you use and how is it presented to the client in a professional way? Do you still keep a backup of the file or is it all on the client to keep track of the images from there?
Chris Austin Photography
You ALWAYS keep a backup, if only for your own purposes. Or at least keep the raw files if you think you'll want to do anythign with them in the future... Or keep a few of the best raw files and ALL the jpgs you give the client. Whatever you want.

Burn them on any DVD, better than 6 CDs in my opinion, and put a nice printed label on it with your logo, maybe the clients names, etc. Or get a DVD burner that can burn an image directly onto the disc, but that's more expensive.

No printed labels!

The glue on those things can ruin a dvd over time. Not to mention it can get stuck in a dvd player.

Look into lightscribe or a disc printer.

Well they make printed labels now that are designed specifically for DVDs. They are made from film and not paper, so they don't absorb moisture (which causes warping). Avery 8962. Never had a problem with them.

what about the case or box? Any reccommendations for a nice dvdcase?

Really? Cool. Did not know that!

Look into jewelboxing or jlee products. Both are nice, but very different from each other.

I've been jewelboxing for quite some time, but I'm getting tired and spending so much time on each one. I'm going to jlee cd cases.

There was just a thread about this from DNL photo... can't find it!!

I've gotten a sample from Jewelboxing, they look cool, though I've heard some people had trouble with their templates, getting your design to line up correctly... so maybe some trial and error until you get it right.

Yes, they are a paint to get set up right - I've just been doing it for about two years, so I always forget about that!

Oh, and about keeping a backup of the images.Yes, I keep a backup. But for my portrait clients, I make sure that they know that they will only be able to order the images during their 14-day ordering period. And my portrait agreement states that after 30 days, they MAY be deleted.

I do keep a copy, but if I let them know that I would always have them, then I don't think they would ever place their orders. They're moms, they're busy, and they'll put off anything that they think can be put off.I also make sure that they know that it is primarily THEIR responsibility to put a copy of the digital files on their computer and place the disc in a safe place (since I offer the digital files). I never want to mislead my portrait clients into thinking that I will be the keeper of their images forever.

I'm doing metal tins too, but i'm thinking about the round ones. They will go well with the tin cases that I'll be giving my brides with all of my info at meetings. The metal tins can be etched or screened with your logo.

We use either these or these

We give DVDs that are silk screened with our custom cover design and a reprinting release. We package them in yellow folders with a black and white baroque ribbon.
