We just bought 20GB worth of Kingston Elite Pro 4Gb cards from newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820134575They are a bit faster than SanDisk Ultra II's. We bought one card a few weeks ago (was $27 then, now $23) and Andy tested it out. We were happy with the performance and ordered four more.
We haven't done extensive testing on the speed, but we both thought the new cards downloaded to Lightroom a lot faster than our Ultra II's.

Yeah, those are the same ones I mentioned in my post. Newegg's price is a little better on the 4GB but I can't believe the price on the 8GB at B&H. Holy crap!
I am a little nervous about using such large cards though. But damn, THAT is a deal!

Use the 8gb cards when you shoot RAW+jpg. I'm assuming you are worried about losing "all of those jpgs". This will reduce the image count per card and allow you the flexibility of RAW.

Kingston has done well by me. Use 256mb if it makes you feel better. Truly it is about your preference. If you don't feel comfortable using something, don't.
I've never heard of a card reader freezing. Matt has a great post somewhere about the *best* card reader. I followed his advice.

Bill, thanks for the heads up on the 8GB card. I bought my first one a couple months ago and I haven't looked back. The 8GB is the perfect size to capture JPG+RAW.

Jeese.
In all things in my life I rely on perspective. I am not a close minded person and refuse to just not use something because I may not feel uncomfortable, anyone who would do that will get nowhere in life. That is some bad advice to give. The point of this forum is to share so that if you dont feel comfortable using something you can open up your mind and see how others have come out of it.
You could have just left it at Kingston has been fine for you and havent had any bad experiences using large sized cards. With this, I thank you for your input.
Also, that card reader that Matt said to use is the exact one I just bought. Brand new. Im not sure why someone would make up something like that. Now you can say you have heard of a card reader freezing...because it did.

A card reader, like any piece of hardware, is just as able to fail as anything else. It's worth noting too that USB ports are notorious for going bad or not working with a particular peripheral. Claiming that anything is unbreakable is just tempting fate.
Regarding the 8GB cards, yeah, I am afraid of losing that many files. Using Raw + JPEG to get less on the card doesn't really make much sense to me when I can just shoot RAW with smaller cards just fine. I shoot with 4 and 2GB cards and have a lot of them, so it's not an issue. I may very well pick up the 8GB at the $40 price, but I'd save it for personal use, because it freaks me out to have that many files on one card. Just a couple weeks ago I had a brand new card that had only been used a few times get corrupted.
But for any of you on the fence, I'll reiterate that we've been using the kingstons and have been liking them so far. The specs are pretty good and kingston is a major memory manufacturer - even if the name isn't familar to you, there's a good chance you're running their ram in your computer right now.

Theresa,
I am so not sure what happened here. You started your post with Jesse, but I believe you meant me. You of course are free to do whatever you want. My intention was to say that the 8 gb cards are larger than a lot of photographers feel comfortable with. That is totally fine. I do not believe that it is bad advice to use what you feel comfortable in this case. Using 4gb or 8gb will make no technical difference in your shooting. Mentally though, if you are worried throughout the day about the potential to lose 8gb of images, that can impact your day.
As far as the card reader goes. I simply said I hadn't heard of one freezing. Maybe I should have added the word *previously*?

That is how I read it too, I do not think there was any negative tone in Bill's original comment.

I just bought 9 cards at circuit city friday. $99 for 8GB Sandisk ExtremeIII and $50 for 4GB. I got $70 (10%) off by asking if they would discount them since I bought so many. I think that made them cheaper than b&h had them
