Hello Friends....

I have a shoot tomorrow. Three sisters. We were going to go to this great park with a really pretty setting, and then downtown for some urban shots, but Dolly is coming in and the weather is awful. Can anyone tell me a great locaiton with great lighting to move thier shoot to that is indoors??? Otherwise I am going to have to cancel, and they are only in town for a few days. I can go anywhere from Houston to Galveston, TX and in between.

Thanks,

Kim

i would be very careful about shooting outdoors in that storm - if one of them gets electricuted, it could be your fault.... ohmy.gif go to the galleria and have some fun there, there are tons of places around there - find a garage and go to it. find a fun store and play with the mannequins. here is a chance to really challenge your creativity. ph34r.gif

There is usually no lightning during a hurricane. I would be more worried about the wind.

Go further North to The Woodlands. The Market Street area is a nice "town square" setting with shops, eateries and such...all good backdrops. And they have some alley ways with brightly painted walls. Most of it has overhanging/covered sidewalk areas to duck under. And they have a parking garage as Tami suggested...

Edit: It is raining lightly off and on up here right now, but should be manageable.

From my limited experience living in hurricane-country, I think shooting outside is a really bad idea. Even if you are under partially covered areas, the wind will be pushing the rain into you anyway. Not to mention the flooding and trying to get from one covered area to the next. Your subjects will grow impatient fast, not to mention the risk you are taking with your gear.

Find something indoors and play it by ear. If the wind and rain dies down and they are up for it, maybe you can pop outside at the end of your session, after you already have some good images and can call it quits if it gets too difficult outside.

Note also that if you lose power, it could be hours or days before it is restored (took over 3 weeks to restore power after Hurricane Charley where I was living in FL). A lot of public places that would normally be open may not be open, or won't have power/lights.

people, we are talking about HOUSTON here...NOT by brownsville, where it really hit...it has been DOWNGRADED to a tropical storm now...

BTW, there's only a 60% of rain tomorrow...and only a 20% chance on Friday...are they in town on Friday??? Maybe push it back a day if you're uber worried bout it???

and would you really put your or someone else's life on the line with that info? i dont care what kind of storm it is, stnding out in the rain photographing a portrait session is is not a good idea, and they would probably think your warped for suggesting it anyways..

that's not an emergency.

I guess I am warped and built my business on it over the last 15 years since I shoot in the rain all the time and my clients love it and makes some of the best images I have ever taken, but then again I enjoy having fun when shooting so the rain is not that big of a deal.

However since I am trying to be a solution to the problem and not part of the problem I will say this:

One: You should not have any problems, the "Hurricane" was so over played on the media (shocker) that Houston (350 miles away) your not even going to feel any effects of the hurricane besides your normal summer shower.

Two:
* Try the hotels in Houston - especially Hilton Americas by the Convention Center
* Rice Apartments on Main and Texas downtown BEAUTIFUL Inside
* Rice University though you need an appointment to shoot there.
* Downtown items has a lot of fun areas along with covered areas which are great to just walk around and be creative in and out of the rain smile.gif
* Galveston Strain is AMAZING and would be my main suggestion for many reasons. One the buildings are very "New Orleans" feel to it so you can get great building with lots of cover, then there is the great food to take a break - from seafood to home made candy shops on the strain. If you want city life you have it with the trashy alley ways, railroad tracks, rusty building fronts, dark staircases, bright colored walls, the list goes on and on. Finally you have the beach, and while an ugly beach it is the beach and with the small Jetties all along the beach front and the higher waves due to Dolly you would get some GREAT wave crashing shots on the rocks/jetties.

Hope it helps and seriously people relax, the person with needing help asked for suggestions and not a bitch session!!! If you don't like the suggestion SO WHAT and besides I have lots of insurance if lighting hits me or my clients, its part of being a professional photographer and professional studio!
