Hello everyone,

at my last wedding I finally broke out the canon st-E2 and flash and did my first attempt outdoors using the wireless flash setup. A storm just finished and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to make an attempt. They turned out to be my favorites from the day!

Really nice for your first try! We've been experimenting for about 3 months now and are loving the results!

Beautiful! I'm hoping to get to know my off-camera flash better.

looks nice! just curious-- I am thinking of getting the st-e2...is it pretty picky about having to really be able to "see" the fronts of the flashes or no? Wondering how flexible of a setup this is...are you bouncing the canon flashes into umbrellas or using a softbox or lightspheres and putting them on stands or what? (if you don't mind me asking) :-)

thanks in advance!

Well done, you have just cleared the first hurdle with OCF (off camera flash) beware, it gets addictive from here on in!

Kate,

Well I haven't used the stE2 in enough situations to tell you accurate answers. I have noticed outdoors (and this happened last night at senior shoot) sometimes when the sun is shining bright it interferes with the signal. I have also noticed the flashes seemed to have to be somewhat in front of the the camera (although it can be off to the side as long as its in front). It worked well this way when it was cloudy or in shade. With these photos i was using straight on flash at them, no diffusers or umbrellas. It also is nice because you can have the high shutter speed working instead of 1/200th with pocket wizards, etc... But I think I plan on investing in the radio poppers so that should pretty much stop the interference thing.

Also, the accuracy helps also if you aim the infared part of the flash at the camera and then turn the flash head towards the subject.

It can be picky, but I've used it outdoors with no problems for the most part. Sometimes bright sunlight will interfere though, but as the PP said, radio poppers should fix that lil' problem. smile.gif

Another option is to get an addition 580, you can set it to not aid in the exposure, but that way if you did need that little extra pop of flash, you could set it to fire as well.

thanks guys-- I will have to look into the radio poppers...i only have experience working with pocket wizards and unless a wizard gives me some $ my pocket can't afford them :-)

Dustin,

Good job on these. The first one is nice. I might even darken the skies a bit more. What was your aperture versus shutter speed?

The second one of just the bride - I might have had the flash on the other side of her - or something to bounce a little fill into her left side of face. To get really picky on the pose, I would have had her turn more towards the camera a tiny bit. I feel a little white on each side of the iris is a really good thing. Also if she would have dropped the shoulder an inch or two, you would have removed the skin fold in her neck.
